Washington, D.C. InDesign User GroupMeeting Notes Archive
Wednesday, May 28, 2003
We had approximately 100 people attend the first meeting of the new Washington, D.C. InDesign® user group! It was held in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland, at the offices of EEI Communications, an Adobe-authorized training center. Mike Witherell, regional expert on InDesign and publishing, chaired the meeting, and all agreed it was a definite success!
The featured speaker was Adobe’s Thomas Phinney, font guru from San Jose, who held the audience spellbound as he shared with the assembled publishing professionals insights into OpenType, the new standard of PostScript typography. His program was titled “Intro to OpenType,” and he not only discussed the history of electronic typefaces, but also showed off what OpenType and InDesign together can do for truly wonderful typesetting. The audience really expressed appreciation for the live demonstration and the Q&A session he conducted. He stayed until late answering questions and providing valuable guidance to many who were on hand.
The next feature for the evening was Adobe’s Noha Edell, who took us on a tour of the many cutting-edge features of InDesign, along with its interaction with the other Adobe publishing tools. Her demonstration was called “Unleash Your Creativity with InDesign 2.” She took us on a tour of features such as live transparency effects and drop-shadows. She showed off the ability to make PDF output, along with many tips and tricks in production technique. She also answered many questions from the attendees, and left all with a good impression of InDesign. Many of the attendees commented that they would love for Noha to come again and show some more.
The evening drew to a close with a free prize giveaway of books, training materials, classroom training, and Adobe software. Mike Witherell gave away copies of his just-completed book, titled Essentials of InDesign, which is now available for order from IconLogic.com. Altogether, over 21 separate prizes were given away, and many of those present went home glad that they made the effort to attend.
