Toronto InDesign User GroupMeeting Notes Archive
May 23, 2007
The meeting began with some announcements by Sebastian and Collin from Adobe. The main point of interest was the mention of the CS3 Launch in Toronto.
(www.adobe.com/events for more information).
After the announcements, the meeting launched with both Collin and Sebastian exploring some of the many new features of InDesign CS3. Some of the key highlights were:
- Default workspace; make and customize your own workspace.
- All CS3 applications use InDesign drawer for tools.
- When changing panels, the blue line at bottom shows where to drag. If it gets too crazy, go back.
- You can't overwrite the "default" keyboard setting.
- Customize menus to make certain items invisible for certain users.
- Menu items will be invisible for tools you use a lot but can see.
- Pages Panel upgrade
- Multi-place files
- Updated Align options
- Improved Control Panel
- Table styles
- Search engine
- Numbered lists
- Variable text fields
- New XML features
- New Effect options
- Open Type & Glyph palette updates
Sebastian and Collin also discussed some great resources for InDesign CS3. One resource that the attendees were very interested in was www.veer.com - a great site to check out fonts
Lastly, Sebastian and Collin discussed issues around transparency flattening and output for print. While they admitted that there are still concerns about using transparency with PostScript output, they did a great demo of how to structure a file so that many of the issues will be resolved. The flattener preview was used to show how altering the layering of transparent objects in relation to how PostScript interprets the file will lead to more predictable - and desirable - results.
