Toronto InDesign User GroupMeeting Notes Archive
October 26, 2006
Despite the predictable small hiccups, registration went really well. People showed up nice and early, which meant that we were able to start more or less on time. Thanks to Sebastian's efforts, we were able to get a nice spread of sandwiches, etc. through a generous donation by an Adobe reseller.
Sebastian started the evening with a great introduction to the user group, outlining the group's mandate, and explaining what we hoped the group would be, and what users would hopefully get out of being part of the group. As part of this, one of the questions that was posed to users was "What do you think good topics would be for future meetings?" The response was terrific, and I have categorized the ideas into some broad groups:
- Tips and tricks
- Using InDesign for multi-page document creation (indexes, Table of contents, tables, etc.)
- Multimedia in InDesign
- Prepress considerations
- Transitioning from Quark XPress
- Using InDesign with other Adobe products
Sebastian's presentation was followed by a coffee break, which allowed users to mingle and network. The halls were buzzing with all sorts of exciting conversations. It was great to see old acquaintances catching up, but it was even greater to see new relationships forming. What a great way to share ideas with other InDesign users.
After the break, we were fortunate enough to have Bob Connolly from PDF pictures as our guest presenter. Bob introduced us to the amazing world of creating media-rich PDFs using InDesign. Not only were his static PDFs amazing, but Bob also showed us how he is using server-side software to allow users to select different topics and combine them into a customized PDF. There was no doubt that the entire audience was captivated by his presentation. Well done, Bob!
The night wrapped up with some great giveaways. In addition to some great Adobe gifts, raffle winners also walked away with training books and videos, third-party InDesign plug-ins, and even a pair of Toronto Maple Leaf tickets!
In conclusion, I have to say that the evening was an uncontested success. Thank you to everyone who shared in this amazing night!
Since our last meeting, the IDUG "crew" has gone through all the feedback forms that you submitted. We were overwhelmed with the positivity of the comments that came from you. It is really exciting to know that we are truly filling a need, and that you value these meetings so much. We were also able to focus on a few key areas that were flagged as areas for improvement. Thank you for helping us learn and grow. We will make every effort to improve each meeting as we get some experience under our belts.
I am happy to announce that we have chosen a tentative date for our next meeting: Thursday January 25, 2007. Hopefully we will all be through the holiday rush by then, and we can focus on another great night. We have based the topic of the evening on your comments and feedback, and I can tell you that it will be a fantastic night. I don't want to say too much just yet until things are finalized, but I will tell you that I am expecting a lot of "oohs" and "ahhhs". Look for more details shortly!
In the meantime, please feel free to share any ideas, thoughts, questions, etc. with us. I always look forward to reading my IDUG email!
Once again, I want to say thank you to all of you for continuing to make this group relevant and exciting!
