We started the evening with a tour of the Art Institute, followed by a presentation by Ted LoCascio. Ted began his presentation with an overview of many of the different applications used in the Creative Suite. Next he moved specifically into object layer options and layer comps in Photoshop®. After creating a design in Photoshop, Ted moved into InDesign® to show how you can turn on and off layers created in Photoshop.
After showing us the convenience of object layer options in Photoshop and InDesign, Ted moved on to show us how to place the same PSD file he made in Photoshop into Illustrator®. He pointed out that this time there was not an object layer options dialog box to choose once you place your PSD file into your layout. Ted did, however, point out that you could choose which layers you want to appear when you first place the PSD file into Illustrator. He also pointed out that you can flatten your PSD file when you place it into Illsutrator.
Some of the other items Ted demonstrated included using the gradient tool on type, creating snippets, using the pencil tool, selecting type, and using the links palette for both InDesign and Illustrator. “Too often users of Illustrator do not use the links palette, and they actually embed their pictures, PSD files, into the layout,” explains Ted. “A great alternative would be to use the linking options that most people use in InDesign to keep file size down.”
Some comments from the meeting:
“Ted brought up really good and interesting topics that I’ve wondered about but never applied to my training, and he was great at explaining them. Invite him to come back again.”
Massiel
“I came here to see if my company should purchase InDesign. There was an abundance of useful info and resources.”
Lahn
“It was great. Learned a lot even though I’ve never taken an InDesign 101 course before. Ted was great awesome instructor! ”
Lisa
Ted wanted to let you all know that if you are interested in buying online training or a CD-ROM, you can visit his website at www.tedlocascio.com. You can also see more samples of Ted’s training in the Learning Center. Click on the Lynda.com link and choose amongst the topics listed.
Don’t forget to take advantage of the special offers by Lynda.com in your member area. These cards were passed out at the July and September meetings.
The evening concluded with a large raffle. Allen Feldman of Feldman’s Photography (www.feldmansphotography.com) donated an additional $100 gift certificate as an added raffle bonus. THANKS, ALLEN!
Many were surprised that the InDesign meeting is a FREE event. Please encourage friends, family, and colleagues to attend our events in the future.
