I was very surprised with the presenter. He was very engaging and knowledgeable, but still was able to explain simple terms. I thought the layout of his presentations had great direction and kept surprising us with all the new stuff...

Meeting Summary: Open Your Eyes to CS5

Thu, Aug 5th, 2010 at 5:30 PM

International Academy of Design and Technology

Event Details

Our August 5th the InDesign User Group Meeting: Open Your Eyes to CS5, with Patrick Koster, proved to be one of our biggest turnouts of the year.

Thanks to Jorge Diaz and the folks at the International Academy of Design and Technology for hosting our 70+ member turnout. The meeting started early so that Patrick could cover as much ground in the three hours as he could.

Patrick began the presentation with showing the group Adobe TV (tv.adobe.com). Patrick pointed out that there are over 250 new features in CS5 and that Adobe TV would be a great place to visit to review many of the features and learn new ones.

Patrick continued his presentation in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and rounded off the presentation in Flash Catalyst. Some of the points he covered included:

* When engineers were working on Photoshop CS5, they had three main themes: How can we give you more creative freedom? How can we make you more effective on the software and how to make smarter tools? How can we help our users collaborate?

* "Content aware" is new to Photoshop fill. There is constant awareness in the spot healing brush.

* Illustrator (Drawing in perspective) Perspective guides...1,2,3 Point Perspective under perspective guides. Under the Free Transform tool, you will find the perspective grid tools and perspective tool. You can work with live type and design elements in perspective.

* Use the Width tool (beautiful strokes) to create variable width and even variable width profiles. Check out the Stroke pallete for all of the new elements you will enjoy.

Patrick also showed us when he drew inside with a selection, the new tools will create a temporary mask. Live type can also act as mask with draw-inside action.

* The Shape builder tool helps you edit and combine shapes together quick and fast.

* InDesign has gone multimedia big time.... Patrick showed everyone how to create a whole layout web page microsite in InDesign. New actions in InDesign CS5 included movement presets such as flying in and when it occurs. You can draw the path of animation now in InDesign. Patrick showed us the timming panel. Using the Objects states panel, Patrick made a little slide show.

* You can work with video streaming and real video into the files and setting up controls as well.

* You can now create pages of different sizes, and each element that comes in is on its own layer (like Illustrator currently)

Patrick finished the presentation by showing us three separate projects using Flash Catalyst.

Finally, the meeting closed with a raffle drawing for fabulous prizes including Creative Suite 5 Design Premium donated by Adobe, Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design Premium Classroom in a book donated by Peachpit Press, 12 ebooks from O’Reilly and many other great CS5 prizes. Patrick and Richard also brought two boxes of Lightroom to raffle off.

Interactive Design for Print Designers with Keith Gilbert

The interactive design marketplace offers new opportunities for designers. Designing for interactivity on screens is different from designing for print. And just as the print world has unique terminology, concepts, and production problems, so does the world of interaction design. This seminar is specifically for print designers, to help you become literate in interaction design, get excited about the opportunities it presents, and learn what you need to add to your skill set to tackle interactive design projects.

You will learn:

* What you can expect to do yourself, and when (and how) to work with a developer or programmer

* Which tool(s) to use for the job: InDesign CS5, Flash Professional or Flash Catalyst

* When to use animation and motion in a project

* How to work with onscreen color, scale, and typography

* About object properties, components, timelines, events, states, and other interactive terminology and concepts

* The current options for outputting to tablets, desktop Web browsers, smartphones, and other devices

. . . and much more!

Who should attend: Experienced print designers who want to learn more about Interaction design
