The inaugural meeting of the Sydney InDesign User Group was held on Thursday 4th March 2004 at the PowerMedia theatre in Pyrmont.

Eliot Harper who was formerly on the Adobe InDesign product team began the evening by explaining what happens behind the “Big Red A”. He provided some history behind Adobe Seattle, from the Aldus PageMaker acquisition in 1994 to the InDesign Team today. Eliot also gave an insight view in what it's like to work for Adobe, and explained the Adobe culture. He then talked about the InDesign Team and gave some product facts about InDesign.

Next, Mal Damkar; the Creative Director at The White Lab, provided attendees with an enthusiastic explanation of how his company uses InDesign to add a creative edge to their work. He explained that The White Lab use over 30 different software applications, and therefore it is essential to have products which are intuitive to use. Mal also showed us an example of how he uses InDesign to create monthly calendars for his customers.

Eliot then shared several tips and tricks on how you can use InDesign to its full potential.

Finally there was a discussion where attendees had an opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts and suggestions. The meeting concluded over a round of beers at a pub down the road. Overall, it was a successful inaugural meeting with informative presentations and a lively discussion. We intend to meet on a bi-monthly basis, and hope that the group will grow in size and strength. The emphasis of the user group is on users, and we hope that the group will continue to provide a means for users to learn, share, and contribute to this local InDesign community.
