InCopy®

The guest speaker for our editorial excursion this meeting was Chad Siegel, Product Manager at Adobe. Amidst the snickers triggered by the classic war of designers vs. editors, Chad started off the night with good reasons why editors should come out of the closet and upgrade to InCopy CS2. InCopy is a professional writing and editing program that integrates tightly with InDesign® to deliver a comprehensive solution for editorial workflow.

With InCopy, layout, story, and galley views help visualize a story in progress while checking in and out assignments ensures the concurrency of a project. New support for Microsoft Word and multiple text formats allow for easier flowing and styling, while other options like track changes and footnotes support add functionality that has been a long time coming to InCopy. Since InCopy is written on the same base code as InDesign, many of the tools have crossed over, helping InCopy users who are used to an InDesign environment. One more added feature, and a personal favorite of mine, is the layout showing an over amount, letting the designer and editor know how much text is left over from a text block.
