Event Details Thank you for joining us on a beautiful summer evening to talk about Interactivity!
Heather Ueckert: File Challenge
We started off with a File Challenge, which we hope will become a regular feature of our meetings so we can more frequently hear your great ideas and see a variety of perspectives. This time, the challenge is to apply interactivity to an existing file created for print. You may interpret 'interactivity' however you wish, pulling from the demos that kEvin and Colin showed, or adding some of your own tricks.
The files are available for download under SIDUG Adventure files at http://www.luminousworks.com/goodies.
Please note that fonts and links are NOT included—feel free to replace with whatever you wish.
To participate in the challenge, create a PDF or SWF file showing your completed solution, and email it to seattle.idug@gmail.com by September 1st (a week before our next meeting). You will do a short presentation of your solution (1-3 minutes max.) at the next meeting, and in return will receive a second raffle ticket—doubling your chances to win!
We can't wait to see what solutions you come up with.
kEvin Friberg: Creating a one-page interactive Online Portfolio
- Two main approaches:
- button actions
- go-to page actions - possibly more "print mindset oriented"
- master pages
- create template
- arrows
- thumbnails
- navigation 1: master page - next page arrows - setup as buttons
- populate actual pages: use place multiple items (up and down arrows and esc to dump)
- navigation 2: define anchor points on each page - setup as go-to anchors. Create "text anchors" in Bookmarks palette
- hyperlinks - create from Hyperlinks panel, "new hyperlink destination"
- on master page, create new hyperlink, type "Text anchor"
- invisible rectangle
- Polish: define page transitions, apply to all spreads
- PDF output settings- Include:
- hyperlinks
- interactive elements
- drag test into web browser
- other resources
Colin Fleming: Trends in Publishing
Colin shared several websites with a variety of approaches to meshing interactivity with print:
Nxtbook Map
Better Homes and Gardens
Parents Magazine
the knot
the nest
the bump
WebMD
Lonely Planet Magazine
coverleaf
MAGHOUND
JPG Magazine
CreateSpace
MagCloud
iGizmo
iMotor
Flyp
Colin Fleming: Interactivity How-To (Buttons)
- Document navigation buttons: best to put them on master page for consistency
- Buttons Panel—can add:
- states (how the button looks on rollover, click, etc.)
- actions (choose event that makes button work)
- Export as SWF (can also do PDF)
- Can use buttons to switch images (on click):
- duplicate item, move to another layer
- make both of them buttons active on click
- Action: Show/Hide Buttons
- Can use buttons to 'fake' a function and change what you see, similar to switching images (above). To make multiple items do the same action together, group them and make one button
- A few things to note when exporting to PDF:
- On export, make sure to click Include: 'Interactive Elements'
- In Buttons panel flyout menu, select hide or show buttons in PDF to set the appropriate original state
- No page curl is available in PDF output
- Some interactions are slightly different than exporting to SWF.
- InDesign to Flash: In CS4, export to Flash CS4 (XFL). Makes each page a frame in Flash. Master page items are copied separately on each page
The final interactive PDF that Colin created in this demo is available in the PDF section below.Next MeetingOur next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8 and our topic is 'Long Documents'. Thank you to those who offered specific topic suggestions.
If you have additional topic suggestions or would be interested in contributing a short presentation, please email us at seattle@indesignusergroup.com.
