The November meeting was held at Adobe headquarters in San Jose in front of an eager crowd of about 40 attendees — a respectable number considering the long (roughly-50 mile) drive between San Francisco and San Jose.

The focus was on an overview of some of the new features of InDesign® CS, along with introductory remarks on the background thoughts behind the full Adobe Creative Suite concept.

First at the podium, after much difficulty getting the projector to work (thanks to Lonn for getting a projector from his office), Caleb Belohlavek, Adobe Creative Suite Group Product Manager, gave us some background on the Adobe Creative Suite concept and implementation. You can get a good review of what the Adobe Creative Suite is all about from the Adobe website:

Next was Steve Werner, a print industry consultant and trainer, who gave us an overview of the new features in InDesign CS. Steve did an excellent job, but I won’t waste your time with my take on it. You’ll get an excellent overview by looking at the InDesign section of the Adobe website. There is even a PDF you can download if you like.

Additionally, we had Peter Truskier, who spoke to us about InDesign scripting at the September meeting, give us an update on the scripting features that are new in InDesign CS. There is a new JavaScript aspect, which has cross-platform capabilities but is not cross-application. There is a new user interface and some new shortcuts. There are some terminology changes you might encounter, and some InDesign 2.0 scripts will need to be altered to run in InDesign CS. For example, since the InDesign creator code was not changed for InDesign CS, the scripts may get confused. Of course, there is much more information available from the InDesign scripting forum.

Again, we had so many raffle prizes, including a copy of InDesign. I think almost everyone who attended walked away with a prize!

I want to thank our raffle sponsors and everyone who attended, and also my staff for another great meeting.

See you next meeting, in January, during Macworld.

Best regards,

Mark Atchley
Bay IDUG Chapter Representative
