The Art Institute of California•San Francisco
We met for the first time at The Art Institute of California•San Francisco, located near UN Plaza in San Francisco. The The Art Institute of California•San Francisco is a leader in career-oriented education in the fields of design, media arts, and fashion; so, needless to say, it’s a good place to have our user group meetings. They were very hospitable and organized, and helped out a lot, especially getting rid of all the empty pizza boxes and soda cans. Thank you!

Social Time
Everyone gathered in the main room waiting anxiously for the pizza and sodas, which were bit late, but extremely welcome when they did arrive. In fact, every single slice was gone when we went to clean up at the conclusion. We did discover that there is a pizza place much closer, so… there shouldn’t be a delay next time. Yeah!

Color Management and InDesign®
Although color management is built into all the professional-level page-layout applications, Adobe has raised the bar and implemented a common color settings user interface, CMM, as well as settings to allow for consistent and reliable color for all its print-based applications.

Presentation
Our presenter, Clark Omholt, is a digital imaging and color management consultant with Rods and Cones, one of the nation’s leading color-consulting firms. Rods and Cones’ clients include Macy’s West (who showed up to see if there was anything they didn’t already know), Tiffany & Co., and Apple Computer. Clark is also founder and president of Spectraflow, a reseller of inkjets, proofing systems, and high-end displays.

Clark spoke on color management in general: defining RGB/CMYK and discussing ICC profiles as the universal translator and the Adobe common color architecture. Clark then followed up with color management for the design workflow, using the color settings, in InDesign (like image import options, image color settings, and specifically, how to set printer profiles). And finally he explained how to successfully print from InDesign. Meanwhile, there was plenty of ongoing Q&A. I think everyone walked away with a much better understanding of why and how to properly set up color management in InDesign.

At the end, we presented Clark with a plaque of appreciation and a round of applause.

Raffle
This month’s raffle was one of the biggest we’ve ever had. Well over $1,000 worth of prizes went to some really lucky winners. We gave away a copy of InDesign 2.0, a copy of Acrobat® 6.0 Professional, a copy of Suitcase 10.0, many books (including two copies of the book InDesign for QuarkXPress Users), and four copies of the book Real World InDesign 2.0. Needless to say, we want to thank all the companies that support our great user group. Without their support, we’d be hard-pressed to make it all work financially.

Personal Note
Well, this was my first meeting, and I think it went relatively well. So thanks, everyone, for your help and continued support for our user group and for Adobe InDesign.

Chapter Representative
