We kicked off our Second Annual Reno InDesign User Group Summer Series at the offices of NAI Alliance. Jim Cooper, VP of Apsiva Catalog solutions demonstrated how InDesign can serve as the hub of multi-channel marketing.

First, we saw how to combine the flexible and intuitive InDesign features with the Illustrator Graphing Tool, to reduce formatting time for charts of every shape and style. We saw that there were a several options (like placing the Illustrator file or directly dragging a chart into InDesign) to enhance our layout with a minimum of effort.

Next, we explored some effective tips for building stylesheets that will automatically render a numerator and denominator in a FRACTION of the time (get it?) that it used to take. Along that same line, we picked up a few tips for constructing nested styles to handle a number of style transitions with a single click.

After our break, we saw another example of a continuing theme in Jim’s presentations: The Synergy between InDesign and Acrobat, and the need to embrace GREEN publishing.

We concluded with a demonstration of the InDesign table features, and an overview of Table and Cell Styles. In the proposed workflow, we did not need to open a spreadsheet document at all. Instead, we did all graphing and table layout strictly in InDesign and Illustrator.

We concluded with a Reno Raffle, where (newcomer) Liz won an hour of Jim Cooper collaborative time, compliments of Apsiva.
