Meeting details

Mark your calendar! Wednesday, August 13th. Join us on the UNR campus for the third (and final) meeting of the InDesign User Group 2008 Summer Series.

What is different about the Summer Series? We do mid-day sessions (11:30am to 1:30pm).

Bring your lunch and feast your eyes on the multi-faceted strengths of Adobe publication!

Based on the latest meeting evaluation forms and subsequent Q/A, our main topic will be: InDesign/Acrobat Electronic Forms Workflow.

In this session we will continue to present techniques for constructing documents and styling vehicles that streamline conventional and PDF production. As always, we take great care to balance our samples and material, so InDesign “novices” feel comfortable and “veterans” find something new to explore.

OVERVIEW
Nearly everything we publish will end up in Portable Document Format at some time. Our overall goal then, is to create PDF documents that are as functional as they are visually appealing. This is particularly true when creating electronic forms. As we might expect, hard-working style sheets are a key component in our new document layout. Our careful attention to detail will be rewarded, as we continue to explore the powerful relationship between Adobe InDesign and Acrobat.

Agenda
==============
BEFORE THE MEETING:
Download and check out the June-July Issue published by our User Group Community cousin chapter in Puerto Rico (www.indesignusergroup.com/chapters/puertorico/newsletters.php).
The majority of the articles are in Spanish, but you will see artistic and functional examples of interactive PDF newsletter layout. While you are at it, check out the lone English-language article.

STAGE 1: Novices and experienced users will benefit from this eclectic review.
For starters: One Acrobat feature you HAVE TO start using; One InDesign tool you might have never used; One InDesign tool you may want to use more often.
And, as promised: A brief follow up on Hanging Punctuation, Page/Spread Management, utilizing Baseline grid, and Pasteboard Options updates.

STAGE 2: Something new for everyone …
We’ll demonstrate some (Practically) foolproof stylesheet creation methods. We’ll troubleshoot and enhance an InDesign (Form) document. We’ll put a new “spin” on reverse heads and embedded objects.

STAGE 3: The main event…
We’ll introduce you to a couple of guaranteed “killer” InDesign Nested Styles for Forms. We will do an in-depth overview of PDF Forms using Acrobat Professional. Then see how to evaluate and re-vamp the InDesign source file to streamline your workflow.

SO…
Why hang around after hours when you can take a long lunch in mid-day to share your InDesign knowledge and benefit from the most economical training experience that you will find?
(With the added bonus of getting out of work!)

YOUR FRIENDLY FACILITATOR
Jim Cooper, Chair of the Reno InDesign User Group
VP of Print Implementations - Apsiva Catalog Solutions

FOOD
Bring your lunch and (if you like) something to share with a new friend.

REGISTRATION IS VERY IMPORTANT
Please register beforehand for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the ability to help us procure some great raffle prizes.

SPECIAL GIFT
With thanks to our “cousin” Indianapolis chapter, the first members (while supplies last, at least 12) to sign in will receive a poster displaying InDesign CS3 shortcuts (MAC on one side and PC on the other), published by our friends at www.indesignsecrets.com. There may be enough for everyone, no fighting!

RAFFLE
Adobe software and great gifts donated by some of our generous sponsors will be raffled off.
For this meeting, we ask that you bring a CHECK to purchase raffle tickets.
More details to come on meeting day.

PARKING CHANGES
Go to www.unr.edu/parking/maps.html to download a PDF of the parking map. Our meeting site (Frandsen Humanities Building) is number 042.
If you picked up a parking pass during the last meeting, you can use it in the YELLOW lot across Virginia Street. You should print YELLOW LOT on the pass along with the date.

If you did not pick up a pass at the last meeting, you will need to stop in, pick up the pass, and jog back to your car. At the meeting, you can get a pass for the next meeting (with the purchase of raffle tickets) and take it with you.
Of course, you should have better luck with street parking during the summer.
You might try Seventh Street between Evans and Center. Three blocks, don’t be a wimp, you chose to live in the desert!

THANKS …
… in advance to Adobe and our entire User Group community (particularly our gracious cousins in Indianapolis, Puerto Rico, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle) and to the kind folks at UNR for their continued hospitality.
Also, we are grateful to Peachpit Press (www.peachpit.com), O’Reilly (www.oreilly.com), and Apsiva (www.apsiva.com) for their generosity.
