Reno InDesign User GroupMeeting Summary
Effective XML Basics Wed, Jul 16th, 2008 at 11:30 AM University of Nevada Reno
Event Details At the second edition of our Reno InDesign User Group Summer Series, we once again welcomed several newcomers, particularly a fine lady who made the trek over the Sierra all the way from Sacramento.
The subject material was diverse, with the main focus on creating and utilizing XML-enabled documents. Even beginning InDesign users were treated to some tips for importing source files and formatting for both print and web.
Some of us saw the XML structure display for the first time and were surprised (not really, because we have come to expect this from Adobe products) how easy it is to maintain and use XML features in documents, thanks to an array of visual displays for tagged data. Most remarkable is that novice InDesign and XML users can be confident that InDesign cannot export anything other than well-formed XML files.
We also saw how tagged graphics in a print layout can be copied, downsampled for web display, and packed for delivery to the web team, along with appropriately tagged content.
As we have seen often in our meetings, automation and XML effectiveness center on the creation and maintenance of hard-working stylesheets.
LOOSE ENDS
A few things that, in retrospect, could have been a little clearer during the presentations include, Hanging Punctuation, Page/Spread Management, utilizing Baseline grid, and Pasteboard options. We hope to briefly re-visit these at the next meeting.
Also, the promised posters did not find their way to the meeting, so we will give them away next time to ALL attendees, while supplies last.
RAFFLE
Loni (possibly the luckiest first-time attendee of our group), took away the grand prize: Adobe InDesign CS3 Thank YouContinued thanks to the University of Nevada, Reno for their hospitality.
Very special thanks to The Technology Center (www.tcreno.net) for some timely Mac troubleshooting, without which this meeting would have been considerably less appealing. If you did not pick up their flyer or a copy of their catalog, then please visit their website.
Thanks also to Apsiva (www.apsiva.com), Peachpit Press (www.peachpit.com) and O’Reilly (www.oreilly.com) for their sponsorship and generous donations. |
