Meeting details
We’re back! Wednesday, July 16th. Please join us on the UNR campus for the second meeting of the InDesign User Group 2008 Summer Series.
What is different about the Summer Series? We do mid-day sessions (11:30am to 1:30pm). Bring your lunch and feast your eyes on the multi-faceted strengths of Adobe publication!
Based on the last meeting evaluation forms, our main topics will be: Long Document Management/Creation and XML Workflow
This session will allow us to build on our field-tested suggestions, presented in earlier meetings. As always, we take great care to balance our presentations, so InDesign “novices” feel comfortable and “veterans” find something new to explore.
ABOUT XML eXtensible Markup Language is an extremely simple concept. InDesign applies the principles so logically that we are using it all the time, often without realizing it. Bottom line, any user at any experience level can use InDesign to create and export Well-Formed XML (guaranteed to improve any workflow) with only 90 seconds of instruction. You gotta see this! So what is the big deal? Once we handle the basics, we can develop techniques to export content that is structured to meet the needs of industry-standard users like webmasters and article-search entities.
What if you have an XML file that you want to compose using InDesign? The same procedures apply. See how to construct “placeholder” blocks (similar to our recent Data Merge segment) to compose documents of any length from a structured XML data source.
Bottom line: If your publication tasks include any cut-and-paste, you can say “goodbye” to this time-wasting practice entirely after attending.
Who can make this kind of promise for the upcoming meeting? Your (possibly) younger- and (hopefully) smarter-than-he-looks chairperson: Jim Cooper has been presenting XML best-practices at InDesign User Groups since 2003 (http://www.indesignusergroup.com/chapters/chicago/notes/2003/09_18/09_18_notes.php).
AGENDA STAGE 1: Novices and experienced users will benefit from this useful review. We have a request for tips on setting up a newsletter with accompanying stylesheets.
STAGE 2: Something new for everyone … Every document should be treated as a multi-channel publication. We’ll use the same newsletter “framework” to build on our Interactive PDF capabilities and introduce the principles of XML.
STAGE 3: The main event… See how to efficiently export your print-ready content to your web team or import and format scary amounts of structured data. Get comfortable with the native InDesign tools that allow you to view and evaluate your XML structure in “real time.” Then, make these document enhancements “transparent” so you can concentrate on your layout and be confident that one click will do it all.
SO… Why hang around after hours when you can take a long lunch in mid-day to share your InDesign knowledge and benefit from the most economical training experience that you will find? (With the added bonus of getting out of work!)
YOUR FRIENDLY FACILITATOR Jim Cooper, Chair of the Reno InDesign User Group VP of Print Implementations - Apsiva Catalog Solutions
FOOD Bring your lunch and (if you like) something to share with a new friend.
REGISTRATION IS VERY IMPORTANT Please register on the website www.indesignusergroup.com/chapters/reno beforehand for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the ability to help us procure some great raffle prizes.
SPECIAL GIFT With thanks to our “cousin” Indianapolis chapter, the first twelve (12) members to sign in will receive a poster displaying InDesign CS3 shortcuts (MAC on one side and PC on the other), published by our friends at www.indesignsecrets.com.
RAFFLE Great gifts donated by some of our generous sponsors will be raffled off. For this meeting, we ask that you bring a CHECK to purchase raffle tickets. More details to come on meeting day.
PARKING CHANGES If you go to www.unr.edu/parking/maps.html you can click the link to download a PDF of the parking map. Our meeting site (Frandsen Humanities Building) is number 042. If you picked up a parking pass during the last meeting, you can use it in the YELLOW lot across Virginia Street. You should print YELLOW LOT on the pass along with the date.
If you did not pick up a pass at the last meeting, you will need to stop in, pick up the pass, and jog back to your car. At the meeting, you can get a pass for the next meeting (with the purchase of raffle tickets) and take it with you. Of course, you should have better luck with street parking during the summer. You might try Seventh Street between Evans and Center. Three blocks, don’t be a wimp, you chose to live in the desert!
THANKS … … in advance to Adobe for their continued support and to the kind folks at UNR for their hospitality. Also, we are grateful to Peachpit Press (www.peachpit.com), O’Reilly (www.oreilly.com), and Apsiva (www.apsiva.com) for their generosity.
