Si estuvo presente en la Sala de Facultad de la Universidad Sagrado Corazón para la Reunión Inaugural del Capítulo Puerto Rico del InDesign User Group, sin duda alguna, fue parte de la historia. Las casi cien personas en asistencia se dieron cita para ver por vez primera el Adobe InDesign CS3. A continuación le contamos un poco de lo sucedido.

El señor José M. Ramos, representante del capítulo de Puerto Rico, comenzó a las 6:30 pm dando una calurosa bienvenida a todos. Luego de algunas formalidades, Ramos dió paso al conferenciante invitado, Gustavo Brunser, Gerente de Desarrollo de Negocios para Adobe Systems. En su presentación, "¡Libera tu creatividad con Adobe InDesign CS3!", el señor Brunser deleitó a la audiencia con el primer vistazo al muy anticipado Creative Suite 3. Gustavo explicó brevemente lo que significa para los usuarios la fusión entre Adobe y Macromedia, y lo que comprenden los nuevos suites de Adobe.

Adobe Creative Suite 3 viene en seis configuraciones completamente nuevas: Adobe Creative Suite 3 ediciones Design Premium y Design Standard; Adobe Creative Suite 3 Web Premium y Web Standard; Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Premium; y para reunir toda la línea de productos, Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection, que combina las 12 nuevas aplicaciones Adobe para diseño y desarrollo en una sola caja: el ambiente creativo más completo jamás anunciado.

Acto seguido, Gustavo, destaca algunas de las nuevas características del InDesign CS3. A continuación, les contamos algunas de ellas:

1- Nuevo interface
Nuevo interface orientado hacia los paneles en vez de los "palettes" que acostumbramos usar. Los nuevos paneles de InDesign CS3 todavía se pueden colocar hacia un lado del monitor, pero ahora en vez de abrir y cerrar como gavetas, se minimizan hasta convertirse en iconos. Para expandir nuevamente, sencillamente deberá oprimir en el icono correspondiente para activar el panel. Este nuevo arreglo de iconos combinado con la capacidad de guardar "workspaces", promete ser uno de los mejores interfaces disponibles.

2- Exportar a XHTML
Con la llegada de DreamWeaver al Creative Suite, ahora ID cuenta con la capacidad de exportar contenido a XHTML.

3- Tablas con estilos
Ahora se puede estilizar una tabla, y luego grabar este estilo como estilo de tabla. Esto permite aplicar el mismo através del documento e incluso através de múltiples documentos utilizando el "load styles command".

4- Comando de "place" ahora con previews y selecciones múltiples
Es posible ver un "preview" de la imagen (es) que se ha seleccionado para posicionar en el documento ID. Incluso, con múltiples imágenes seleccionadas, podrá reciclar alrededor de las selecciones utilizando las flechas del teclado. Además, se pueden combinar imágenes junto con textos.

5- ¿InDesign dentro de InDesign?
Una de las características que más impresionó fue la capacidad de posicionar un documento de ID dentro de otro, como si fuera un PDF o cualquier otra imagen. Como si fuera poco, ID automáticamente detecta modificaciones hechas al documento posicionado (un poco como Photoshop manera los "smart objects"). Esto permite que otros puedan colaborar en un proyecto y al mismo tiempo se puedan ensamblar en un documento maestro. Ideal para medios como periódicos y revistas.

6- (Find / Change) Buscar y cambiar cualquier cosa
Ahora es posible, através del "Find / Change command", buscar y cambiar prácticamente cualquier atributo. Este comando ahora permite al usuario guardar búsquedas, hacer búsquedas que incluyan páginas maestras, notas de pie de página, en capas escondidas o "locked", y atraves de GREP (búsqueda por expresiones regulares), correr busquedas muy complejas y/o basadas en patrones.

Brunser, además, reveló muchos "tips and tricks", no tan solo para el InDesign CS3, sino también para el CS2. Algunos de estos fueron:

1- Convertir tablas hechas en Power Point a elegantes gráficas completamente editables. El secreto tras esto es abrir estas tablas de Powerpoint en Illustrator, y luego editarlas, pues abren como objetos vectores, completamente editables.

2- Forzar texto que haga "text wrap" alrededor de una gráfica o imagen utilizando el "pencil tool". Al colocar una imagen y un marco de texto encima (una parte encima y la otra al lado), podrá utilizar la herramienta del lápiz para siluetear la imagen en el lado del texto. Deberá comenzar justo encima del texto, hacia el lado donde quieres que corra el texto. La clave está en que tiene que terminar justo en el borde inferior del marco de texto.

Finalmente, Gustavo contestó varias preguntas del auditorio. Una de estas giró en torno a la polémica de convertir (o no) el texto en línea antes de enviar a prensa. Brunser recomendó que esto no se hiciera. La solución es cambiar a fuentes tipo "Open Type", para mejor compatibilidad entre plataformas. Esto es en adicion a todas las demás ventajas que se deriban del uso de este tipo de fuentes.

Despues de un receso, el señor Tommy de Armas planteó la produccion de revistas en formato electrónico, como una solucion costo-efectiva y, según añadió, hacia donde su mueve la industria.

Culminamos el evento con una rifa donde se regalaron más de $3,000 dólares en premios.

If you were present at the Inaugural Meeting of the Puerto Rico Chapter, you were part of something very special. For the first time in all of the Caribbean and Latin America the Creative Suite 3 was unveiled. All of our members and guests received their first look at some ot the amazing features of InDesign CS3 and a bit more. Here's a summary of what happened.

Chapter Rep, Jose M. Ramos kicked off the evening by giving a warm welcome to all. After some formalities, José introduced the featured presenter, Gustavo Brunser, Manager of Business Development for Adobe Systems. In the presentation titled, “ Unleash your creativity with Adobe InDesign CS3! ”, Mr. Brunser delighted the audience by giving them the first look at the much anticipated Creative Suite 3. Gustavo briefly explained what it means for users the merger between Adobe and Macromedia, and what's included in the new Adobe suites.

Adobe Creative Suite 3 comes in six completely new configurations: Adobe Creative Suite 3 editions Design Premium and Design Standard; Adobe Creative Suite 3 Web Premium and Web Standard; Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Premium; and to unite all of the product lines, Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection, which combines all 12 new Adobe applications for design and development in a single box: the most complete and creative atmosphere ever announced.

Immediately afterwards, Gustavo, emphasized some of the new features of InDesign CS3. Here's a brief summary of some of the features discussed.

1 - Intuitive and customizable workspace
Work in an environment that makes it easier to be productive. Keep just the tools, panels, and menus you use most at your fingertips, and dock self-adjusting panels out of the way when not in use to free up your workspace.

2 - XHTML export
Enable multiformat publishing, including print-to-web workflows, by exporting InDesign content as XHTML. Edit the exported content in Adobe Dreamweaver® CS3 software and automatically format it using cascading style sheets.

3 - Table and cell styles
Quickly and consistently format tables using table and cell styles. Even use regional cell styles to apply unique formatting to specific areas of a table, such as its header, footer, and body.

4 - Productivity enhancements
Perform a variety of tasks more efficiently using new and enhanced productivity features, including Multi-file Place, Quick Apply, faster frame fitting, and the visual Pages panel.

5 - Placed InDesign files
Reuse layouts by placing INDD files in another InDesign document. Links remain intact, and InDesign automatically notifies you of updates to the linked INDD file.

6 - Advanced Find/Change on text and objects
Apply changes to text and object attributes across one or more documents. Include master pages, footnotes, and locked or hidden layers in a search; save search settings for easy reuse; and perform grep pattern–based searches on strings of text.

In addition, Gustavo also revealed many “tips and tricks”, not only for InDesign CS3, but also for the CS2. Some of these were:

1 - How to turn Power Point tables and graphics to elegant completely editable ones. The secret lies in opening the Powerpoint file in Adobe Illustrator. This will allow you to edit the contents because of the fact that it will open all objects as vectors.

2 - How to force text to wrap around a graph or image using the pencil tool. When placing a text frame partially on top (or alongside) an image, you can use the pencil tool to effectively draw a line, starting from the top of the text frame along the contour of the side of the image (the way you would like the text to wrap). The line you make must not touch the image but rather, come close to it. The trick lies in ending the line right at the bottom of the text frame. It is also important to draw the line towards the side of the text box where you want the text.

Finally, Gustavo answered several questions from the audience. One of these was the question of wether or not to convert all text to outlines before handing over a job to the printers. Gustavo highly advised against this practice and recommended using Open Type fonts when ever possible. This would solve any cross platform problems they were experiencing.

After a brief intermission, Tommy de Armas raised the argument in favor of shifting magazine production to PDF. In his opinion this is where the market is heading. He showcased one of his projects where he is producing a very customizable PDF magazine that caters to the user's needs.

We culminated the event with a raffle where more than $3.000 dollars in prizes were given out.
