May 10, 2007

The Portland IDUG meeting on May 10th was truly the gathering many of us have been waiting for: the unveiling of the Adobe Creative Suite 3’s version of InDesign. Our guest speaker who helped get our feet wet was Lisa Forrester from Adobe Systems. The pivotal selling point that Lisa drove home was the ease of workflow that InDesign CS3 provides for its users.

As a sidekick introduction, Lisa also gave us a glimpse of Adobe Bridge CS3, which wowed everyone with its liquid interface previewer (similar to Adobe Lightroom), filtered paneling, and metadata import manipulation.

From Bridge, the focus shifted to the primary product of interest for our group, InDesign. New application features include a slimmed-down toolbar and mouse-over panels, which allow for greater control over the amount of available workspace on your screen. Also, InDesign CS3 has been revved up with an improved GREP search engine in the Find/Change panel, which can address the most multi-tasking details in any project. But the facet of InDesign CS3 that brought out most of the “woo’s” and “ahh’s” was the Effects Panel. With this panel (“palette” no longer being the en vogue terminology with CS3), a designer can summon all the Photoshop filter effects he or she could desire to put into their project. And speaking of cross-media workflow, InDesign CS3 is able to translate a prepress template into an XHTML file using CSS handlers. Now that’s truly cross-platform proficiency!
