The second meeting of the Phoenix InDesign User Group was met with great success as 41 members gathered in attendance. The meeting started with a warm welcome from Mary Winters as she reviewed some of the survey results from our last meeting. The survey results, not surprisingly, revealed that most of our attendees are advanced, CS3 and CS4 users working on Macs. A large majority of the responders also preferred to attend the meetings bi-monthly. The results will help guide the new leadership team as they develop the format of future meetings.

Next, Tami Rodgers led our first Member Minute segment for this meeting. The Member Minute will be an ongoing segment of our future meetings which give an opportunity for members to share a short tip with the group before the main presentation. All members are encouraged to participate. If you are interested in presenting for a future Member Minute, please contact Rick Burress at rick@artistec.com.

Tami’s short presentation reviewed 3 different options for importing images into your document: Place command, Drag and Drop, and using Show Import Options. As Tami reviewed the different options, members of the audience also added other tips such as using the up and down arrows to scroll through images loaded in the multiple place command and turning off the transparent background option in the Show Import Options dialog. The quick overview opened up a wonderful dialogue amongst the group.

The main presentation, “19 InDesign Productivity Tips” was presented by Marc Oxborrow. Marc rounded up members of his team at McMurry to come up with some useful productivity tips to share. His 19 tips were loosely grouped into 6 creative categories: Roll Your Own, Palette Power, Table Manners, Who Knew?, Dusty Corners, and Quick & Dirty. Marc shared many great tips and learned a few things too as he took questions and feedback from the audience. Sprinkled throughout the meeting were opportunities to win exciting raffle prizes. Each member was given one free raffle ticket to enter in the raffles. Members were also able to purchase additional raffle tickets to support the funding of the group (additional tickets were $5 for 2 tickets or $10 for 5 tickets). The raffle ticket purchase option will continue for future meetings and all proceeds will benefit the members in covering the cost of the meetings. Below is a list of winners from the raffle.

The meeting concluded with the announcement of the new leadership team. The term of service for the new team will be one year. Congratulations to President, Tami Rodgers; Director of Marketing, Andrea Heser; Director of Content, Rick Burress; Director of Membership, Sonia Washington; Director of Operations, Mary Winters; and Director of Administration, Julie Fong. The new team will be meeting in the next few weeks to strategize for the next meeting.
