The Phoenix InDesign User Group inaugural meeting was a success by all accounts!

Event Details The Phoenix Chapter of Adobe InDesign User Group got off the ground on Thursday, July 30. The inaugural meeting was, by all accounts, a great success with 47 people in attendance. Thirty minutes of enjoying a lovely spread of hors d’œuvres and socializing was followed with a short welcome and introduction to the group by McMurry’s Design Director Marc Oxborrow, who also served as “emcee” for the evening. Marc was, as usual, dapper in a full tux! Next, Tami Rodgers, a McMurry Art Director, gave a detailed explanation of the leadership roles proposed for the Phoenix Chapter. These include:
• President (Leads meetings, provides direction and support to other roles)
• Director of Content (Coordinates content and presenters for each meeting)
• Director of Marketing (Promotes the group using traditional and social media tools)
• Director of Operations (Coordinates location, food and prizes for each meeting)
• Director of Membership (Coordinates registration table at meetings, encourages attendance, and answers questions from members)
• Director of Administration (Creates and posts agendas and meeting summaries online)
Leadership roles are proposed because the theory is to spread the responsibilities behind the group’s organization among a larger group of people, which will avoid giving all of the responsibility to just one or two people.
The group’s founders envision the IDUG Phoenix Chapter representing and meeting the needs and the diversity of the Phoenix creative community. To help the group meet those needs, a survey was distributed to those in attendance to gather vital information that will give guidance and lay the framework for the Phoenix Chapter. The survey is available online at http://tinyurl.com/phx-idug-survey-2009 for those who did not fill it out at the meeting. Please take the time to fill out the survey; the deadline to complete it is Aug. 14. The survey also collects nominations for the leadership roles, and everyone is urged to nominate themselves, an acquaintance, or colleague who would enjoy a position. As Marc mentioned at the meeting, these titles look great on a resume.
Next on the agenda was the meeting’s main presenter, Phoenix Adobe guru Rick Burress, who shared InDesign tips and tricks, including the power of style sheets and how using GREP can give “find and search” a shot of steroids.
