Meeting Summary: Variable Data Showcase
Tue, Jul 20th, 2010 at 5:30 PM
Arizona Office Technologies
Event DetailsThe July 20th meeting marked the 1st anniversary for the Phoenix IDUG chapter. We can’t believe it has already been a year!
This year our leadership team has led us through a number of excellent presentations, but now it is time to pass the baton. We are currently calling for nominations for the next leadership team. If you are interested or would like to nominate someone, please download the form below for instructions. All nominations must be submitted by Friday, August 6. Once all nominations are received, the nominees will be contacted about the next steps.
Lisa Cozzetti from Phoenix Computer Training began our Member Minute presentation with an introduction to the Kuler extension in InDesign. The Kuler extension helps you pick color themes for your designs. Starting with InDesign CS4, Adobe introduced a new window option called Extensions. When selecting the Kuler extension from the Windows menu, InDesign opens a panel with color themes shared by users of the Kuler online community. You can use what has been created or create your own. For more detailed information, watch this video on Adobe TV.
Next, Director of Content, Rick Burress reviewed two basic features for inserting variable data in InDesign: Data Merge and Text Variables. For detailed information on how to apply both of these features, watch this video on Adobe TV.
The final presentation for the evening delivered by Senior Solutions Engineer Dominic Rotundo of XmPie Inc, covered a brief overview of the XmPie uDirect solution and how it integrates with InDesign. The uDirect plug-in for InDesign works much like the Data Merge function that Rick introduced. There are many variable placeholders that can be inserted into the design. However, the difference is uDirect allows you to add conditional rules to the data variables further extending the power of the variable elements. For a more in depth demonstration of how this works, download the trial version and tutorials from the XmPie Download Center. If you click on the recordings tab, you can also download a step-by-step WebEx video demo.
