Perth's first anniversary InDesign User Group Meeting was held 30 September. The User Group has grown to over 275 members since the group's start-up a year ago.

This meeting once again had a great member attendance. Topic for this meeting was "Publishing for Accessibility", and we were privileged to have Chandi Perera, CEO for Typefi Systems, as our guest speaker for the evening.

The evening was broken into two sessions. The first session focussed on the principles of designing for accessibility, whilst the second session covered InDesign specific accessibility tools and limitations.

It was interesting to hear that accessibility really starts at the content structure. Many members commented on how they would have never considered that certain design aspects would make PDFs created from their InDesign files so much less accessible.

The notes for the evening (Chandi's powerpoint slides) have been made into an Accessible PDF from InDesign, using the principles learnt during the session. There's a link at the bottom of the summary through which you can download the notes.

There was a great buzz at the end of the meeting... and we finished off with our usual give-away prizes, thanks to our sponsors.

Next Meeting

Our last meeting for this year will be held on Tuesday, 1 December 2009, and has as theme "InDesign Trivia (Member Requests Night)". Yes, it will be a meeting of varied topics, which will be drawn from submitted member requests.
