The Ottawa IDUG chapter’s third meeting went into the books with grace.

We started the meeting with a brief review of who and what IDUG is and the benefits available to the members. From there, it was on to the show.

Adobe’s Sebastian Distefano began with demonstrating the Gradient Feather tool. This time-saving tool’s use drew a great appreciation from the crowd.

From there, we proceeded to look at a couple of best-practice approaches. Seb looked at:

  • Colour blending modes and “The Seb” duotone effect

  • Masks, pixel-accurate masking techniques

The next topic was the one we all came for: handling transparencies. We first talked about the issues of dealing with print service providers and their concerns with handling transparencies. Seb dispelled the myths and their gripes and offered solutions and insights into how to clear the air between designers and printers. He moved on to demonstrating how to get predictable results with transparencies and how to use the Separation Preview and Flattener Preview.

We also reviewed optimal file types for print, and naturally the advantages and recommendations for using PDF were addressed.

Finally, Sebastian reviewed ways for designers to protect their text from being rasterized in their print layouts.

A nice addition to the evening's presentation was Eliquo’s Director of Training, Michael Cooper, who took the podium to share some of his best practices. Michael provided the IDUG members with a demonstration on overprint previewing when preflighting your files. He also added more support to Sebastian's earlier recommendation on using a PDF prepress workflow, and he highlighted additional advantages.
