March 22, 2007

The Ottawa chapter’s inaugural meeting has come and gone, but not without leaving our members with great reason to come back for more. The meeting was held at Adobe’s Canadian head office in a wonderful presentation room equipped with multiple big screens and flat panel monitors to ensure that no one would miss the demonstrations.

We were spoiled to have had two of Adobe top product managers and experts leading us in an informative, entertaining and enticing evening of exploration. Our hosts were Sebastian Distefano, Creative Professional and Digital Video Market Specialist and Colin Smith, Applications Specialist and Technical Resource Manager.

We started the evening off with an overview of what IDUG is and what we as a chapter want it to evolve into. Sebastian ran through the rules of engagement with brisk clicks of the mouse to move on to the heart of our being -- what our members want to see and learn! The members were given the platform to speak their minds and tell us what presentation and discussion topics they would like to see in future meetings.

The topic list shaped up like the following:

  • Advanced data-driven content
  • Database integration
  • Working with transparencies
  • Scripting within InDesign
  • InCopy – editorial workflows
  • Typography – history of type
  • XML integration
  • CS3 application integration and workflows
  • Interactive PDF from InDesign
  • Colour Management
  • Open Type
  • Anchored Objects
  • Master Pages

Before the mid-point of the evening, Colin started our tips & tricks segment with a history lesson on typography and then proceeded to demonstrate relative hidden productivity and formatting features.

After taking a short refreshment break and some new meetings between members, we sat down and got back to the remaining tips & tricks demonstrations.

Our T & T menu was as follows:

  • Anchored Objects – Presented by Sebastian
  • Master Pages – Presented by Colin
  • Object Styles – Presented by Sebastian
  • Nested Styles – Presented by Sebastian
  • Preview to some upcoming features in InDesign CS3 - Presented by Sebastian

Following the sneak peak of the new InDesign CS3 features, we held a raffle and gave away some beautiful InDesign and design books supplied by Peachpit Press and O’Reilly as well as a number of Total Training DVDs.

Additional prizes were donated by Mooney’s Bay Computer (discount on professional services), and Eliquo Training & Development offered discounted rates on their InDesign training courses for all IDUG members.

A great big thanks goes out to Sebastian and Colin for their time and demonstrations and again to Sebastian for his dedication to the development of the InDesign User Group in Ottawa as well as in Toronto. We would also like to thank our sponsors and Adobe Ottawa for allowing us to use their new office and to Adobe Canada’s Toronto office for their support.

We’re already looking forward to our next meeting where we will feature more demonstrations from additional industry experts and to meeting with our new members.
