The Orlando InDesign User Group met July 25, 2006 at the Orlando Sentinel. We had over 78 graphic professionals in attendance. Mark Poulalion, Sr. Art Director for Sport Diver, of World Publications, kicked the night off with our very popular pre-meeting Question and Answer session. An audience member brought to our attention that we should check if we have the latest update to InDesign CS2 on our computers currently 4.0.4.

This month’s special guest was Michael Witherell (mikewitherell@jetsetcom.net), a Washington D.C. area Adobe Certified Expert. Mike’s dry sense of humor (“everyone’s name is Mark tonight”) and his Washingtonian savoir-faire kept members learning with enthusiastic interest until approximately 9:30 p.m.

Session I: Typography and Font Management.

Typography: A quick review from common typesetting errors (no double spaces between each sentence, please!), to an overview of quality control. Be sure to download the detailed notes in PDF or PPT format.

Font Management: Mike’s presentation on font management was extremely thorough--everything from cleaning (look out for dfonts!), organizing (there are about 7 secret folders where fonts hide), and trashing fonts (get rid of fonts dated 1985-1993), as well as an overview of the different font management programs available. Be sure to download the detailed notes in PDF or PPT format.

Session II: Color Management for Digital Publishing

This session covered a wide gamut of color management issues ranging from monitor calibration to how the eye works, to how paper and light affects color.

Big thoughts to take home:

  1. Mike stressed the importance of having an accurate monitor calibration BEFORE any color management system could be effective. The monitor should be calibrated with a high-quality spectrophotometer.

  2. Create and use the same color profile in all 4 Adobe programs beginning with Photoshop. From there, synchronize the profiles to match Photoshop’s in InDesign, Illustrator and Acrobat

  3. If you adopt an RGB workflow the way Mike recommends, make sure you set the InDesign document to also be RGB. Click on Edit > Transparency Blend Space > and choose the RGB color model. That way there is color agreement between color images and the document itself, and any transparency tricks will image the way you expect them to.

“I am a new InDesign user and a first-time User Group attendee. While tonight’s topics were covered very in-depth for experienced users, I feel that I benefited from the questions asked by the more experienced attendees. Their trouble shooting Q&A taught me what to look for before I get into the same trouble. Great Speaker.”
