Orlando InDesign User Group
Meeting Notes Archive
Wednesday, June 28, 2006
Over 68 Orlando professionals were in attendance as The Adobe InDesign User Group of Orlando, met at our new location, The Orlando Sentinel, 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28, 2006. Attendees were greeted by Mark Poulalion, our MC, as he answered various InDesign questions, welcomed everyone to our new space and gave announcements about future meetings; then Mark introduced our amazing presenter.
We were fortunate to have Kacey Crouch as our upbeat speaker for the evening. Kacey’s an Adobe Certified Software Instructor and owner of Pixeldot, Inc. Kacey, breezed through many tips about both Illustrator and InDesign. Kacey first touched on InDesign scripts and the Adobe Bridge. Kacey unlocked the install extra “goodies disks” for Adobe Illustrator as she uncovered hundreds of additional Patterns, Brushes, Symbols and Templates. After a short break Kacey continued her second session on Adobe InDesign CS2. Kacey covered a lot of InDesign ground. Here are notes “Just the facts” taken by one of our attendees...
On Macs, you can drag a Photoshop file into InDesign by clicking on the icon in the document frame
How to dock a palette: “grab the tab” and pull it over to the side--right or left
Printing tip: print any page, regardless of its page number in the document. Example: Type +5 - +7 (the 5th page through the 7th) in the print dialog box instead of page numbers (or section page numbers)
Master pages: To release master page items, cmd-shift-click or choose Override All Master Page Items in the fly out menu (you may choose more than one page at a time)
Styles:
- Paragraph styles are the “big daddy” of the styles--for body text and headlines
- Character styles are for individual characters
- One way to create a new style is to design the look of the type, then place the cursor in the text, then choose “New Paragraph Style”
- Next style: control-click/right-click on the first style in the Paragraph Styles palette and choose apply “style name” then next style. Always choose the first style.
- Paste without formatting (cmd-shift-v) will format the text surrounding with the same point size, font, etc.
Object styles: this remembers settings for objects and text boxes
Libraries:
- This is a stand alone document which is a place to hold page elements commonly used in your documents, such as logos, disclaimer text, folios.
- Libraries are searchable.
Snippet: Drag an item from your document to your desktop to e-mail or stash for a minute. This is a temporary solution, whereas libraries are more permanent.
InBookletSE: Will place your pages into printer spreads automatically
