Meeting Summary

Digital Photo Handling -- Photoshop to InDesign to PDF
Tue, May 20th, 2008 at 6:00 PM
Orlando Sentinel Conference Center
Event Details

You could have heard a pin drop as our guest speaker, Douglas Mitchell, addressed 85 of our members in the care and use of color Photoshop images across all CS3 applications. He showed the creation of actions in Photoshop for size (suggesting "shortcut" F1), exposure (F2), hue saturation (F3), as well as straighten, crop, image size, resolution, color Correction, and Save As (.jpg) He also demonstrated provision for predictable colors between monitor, proof, and CMYK printing press as well as resolutions for "save as" photos for:

Web: 72ppi
Web PDF publications: 150ppi (looks smooth when printed)
Monitor, LCD Projector Presentations (PowerPoint or Keynote: 100ppi allows for scale up)
Inkjet or Laser printer: 150ppi
Newsprint: 200ppi (ask production manager)
CMYK printing press: 200-300ppi (ask production manager) (HP Indigo CMYK Press)

Doug's motto for image resolutionis "High to Low is the Way to Go – Big to Small Works for Them All – Low to High Pixel Pie."

Another exciting topic was the ability to place multiple photos in one "Place" command into existing InDesign frames. This was a thrilling development for many in the audience, as evidenced by the "oohs" and "aahs" around the room. Once an exported high-resolution PDF has been created, it can be saved, and different resolution PDF files may be generated from that original.

Doug's website at www.trainingbrain.com covers many tips, and he can be contacted at doug@trainingbrain.com.

He also highly recommends his hero, Russell Brown, Adobe Senior Designer, as a resource for further Photoshop and CS3 Tips and Tricks, at www.russellbrown.com.

Suffice it to say, Doug's lecture covered a lot of the "things you always wanted to know about Photoshop, but were afraid to ask!"

Kacey’s an Adobe Certified Software Instructor and owner of Pixeldot, Inc. Kacey, is well know as a presenter at Adobe events and InDesign conferences. Her topics of the night are:

Using the Assets of the Creative Suite
CS3 ships with many built in goodies. Some you may have used before, such as templates in InDesign, or brushes in Illustrator, but are you really getting the most of these freebies? We will explore where to find the hidden goodies Adobe gives to us, and how to use them in ways beyond the obvious.

Managing Images and Choosing File Types
While the idea of picking a file type may not sound glamorous, it is essential to maximizing the capabilities of your images. Learn when to choose PSD over TIF, and when PDF is better than EPS.

Check the meeting notes Archive: Wednesday, June 28, 2006, for photos and notes from Kacey’s last Orlando presentation.

Be sure to register so we have an accurate count for our usual pizza and refreshments...
