I got more in this 3 hours than I’ve gotten in working with individual tutors all the previous year.

Meeting Summary: Creative Suite CS5 Revealed - Afternoon 12:30-4:30

Wed, May 26th, 2010 at 12:30 PM

Winter Park Civic Center

Event Details

On May 26, a total of 198 attendees packed two Orlando InDesign User Group meetings and were rewarded with a mind-blowing look at the recently launched InDesign CS5.

After checking in, attendees enjoyed a lavish selection of deli sandwiches, fruit, crudités, snack crackers, chips and dips, water, coffee and tiramisu while visiting the exhibits of our sponsors. We want to thank our exhibitors: Connecting Point, Abbott Printing and of course, Adobe.

The presentation began with a bird’s eye view of the new Adobe FlashCatalyst design environment, which allows users to build and prototype apps without coding, tightens workflow between designers and developers, and then smoothly hands off to Adobe Flash Builder for more advanced Flex application work.

That led to a look at Adobe’s new online service: CSLive Services. A 12-month free subscription is included with each CS5 Suite, giving access to tools like CS Review (allows sharing of design content online for review/approval), BrowserLab (a multibrower Web design testing mechanism), Adobe Story (a searchable storyboarding system for video that lives “in the cloud.”)

Appetites more than whetted, the rapt crowd was then treated to an in-depth look at a half-dozen or more of the hottest features in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Among hot items that Patrick Koster, Adobe Senior Solutions Engineer, demonstrated were:

- Adobe Mini Bridge, a browser/explorer/contents panel inside each application

Photoshop
- Smart Radius, which fills in edge details of any selection.

- Content Aware Fill, which makes removal of a component from an image faster and more seamless than you can believe until you see it.

- Adobe Repousee, which creates 3D depth and dimensionality in a 2D image

InDesign
- Now there’s a Layers panel that works just like Illustrator’s Layers panel!!!!!!! Selections can be aligned/stacked from within this panel.

- Different page sizes in one document.

- The ability to have headlines or other text blocks span multiple columns in the same text frame.

- Live Captions: A new text variable feature which allows the user to easily add captions to graphics using that image's metadata.

- Simplified Transformations: Using the content grabber and the ability to transform multiple objects without grouping them.

- The Gap Tool: This new tool manages white space instead of objects.

Illustrator
- Perspective Grid and Perspective Selection Tools, help create realistic artwork with depth, all proportional. (Ooh’s, aah’s and applause from the crowd met this demonstration)

- Beautiful Strokes creates variable widths within a single path quickly and easily, working on only one side of the stroke or both.

- Path Joining - The ability to create dash patterns for strokes and align the dashes to corners and path ends got so much applause it appeared to be what the whole of the Orlando design community has been waiting for.

It was obvious early on that money spent on any of these packages would be made back very quickly in increased productivity. A common theme heard in all the break and post-presentation conversations was that CS5 is going to make users’ lives better. Nearly everyone came away learning about a new feature or several.

Thank you

A big thank you to our presenter for the evening, Patrick Koster, as well as those who donated prizes for our raffle: Connecting Point (Ipod Nano, Things task management software, IT services), Olive Garden (the night’s dessert, dining cards, event discounts), Adobe Press (Layers and InDesign magazine subscriptions and a plethora of design manuals and other books), Abbott Printing and Adobe Systems (full copy of Adobe Creative Suite CS5).

Comments from attendees

I love the HDR photography features, which I’ve found no other way to achieve before CS5.

The edge detail refinement features are amazing!

This was great! Wish they were held more often.

After the presentation, Patrick Koster generously spent time offering in-depth answers and guidance to individual attendees – that was so cool!

I learned several things that even supposed local experts have not been able to tell me.

I got more in this 3 hours than I’ve gotten in working with individual tutors all the previous year.
