New York City InDesign User Group

Meeting Notes Archive

Tuesday, June 6, 2006

Tuesday June 6 marked the third meeting this year of the New York InDesign Users Group. Over 120 "stylish" members turned out to learn a thing or two about Styles (Character, Paragraph, Table, and Object).

Prolific author and expert Sandee Cohen kicked things off by demonstrating a number of clever nested styles she and co-author Steve Werner deployed in their latest offering for Peachpit Press entitled "Real World Creative Suite 2." Included in her presentation was an inline object style with a built in text wrap that served to keep two graphics a consistent distance apart.

Next up was Teacup Software's Lawrence Horwitz, who reprised his demo of their powerful Tables Styles and Cell Styles plug-in for InDesign. If tables are a staple of your InDesign diet, this plug-in is a must-have.

Following Lawrence was another prolific writer and DTP expert, Michael Baumgardt. Michael continued the night's theme by showing the group how to use the Apply Next feature in conjunction with Nested Paragraph Styles to achieve sophisticated style automation. Michael also plugged his upcoming one-day Quark to InDesign seminar that will be held at FIT on August 8. For more information please visit his website at:

After a break, next up was designer Stephanie Aaron <http://www.aarondesigninc.com>. Stephanie showed off a beautiful layout that also used a number of well thought out styles that helped speed production. Included in Stephanie's presentation was a smart use of sidebar tables to help organize small text blocks and graphics.

Last but not least was "The InDesigner" podcast host Michael Murphy. In his day job as a magazine designer, Michael wowed the group with a complex series of nested styles built to service an attractive table of contents page in his publication. Noteworthy was how Michael used Layers in his presentation to help explain the structure of his work.

The night ended customarily with another big raffle sponsored by Adobe Systems, Peachpit Press, O'Reilly books, and Mobile Mac Training.
