New York City InDesign User GroupMeeting Notes Archive
Tuesday, April 25, 2006
Tuesday, April 25 marked the second 2006 meeting of the New York City InDesign® user group. Over 160 members packed the Katie Murphy Auditorium at FIT, making this the second-largest event in NYC IDUG history.
Alison Catellona of Mobile Mac Training (www.mobilemactraining.com) was the first presenter. Alison's demo covered the finer points of using InDesign's powerful Book feature to synchronize styles and swatches across multiple documents. Afterwards, Alison showed InDesign's table of contents feature, noting that this excellent feature is not limited to tables of contents alone. Some comments included:
"Alison is a great presenter; she is way ahead of me, but I did take notes!"
"Alison's presentation was great. Tools for long documents are something not everyone thinks about, but are very helpful!"
In the second half of the evening, Lucy Albanese, Design Director at HarperCollins Publishers, gave a fascinating and informative look at how her company made the gradual transition from QuarkXPress to Adobe InDesign. Since HC switched to InDesign:
- 100% of all jacket designers have converted to InDesign
- 100% of all interior designers have converted to InDesign
- All regular HC freelancers are using InDesign
- All typesetters/compositors are using InDesign
- Very few or no major printing issues are occurring with InDesign
- 235 text interior files have been set in InDesign
Based on the feedback we received, Lucy's presentation hit home with many members who are facing similar transitions. Here are a few quotes from the evaluations:
"Great presentations, especially Lucy Albanese, who was organized, informative, and charming. Strong case for the power and flexibility of InDesign."
"I've been wishing for a lecture like Lucy's; she's my hero!"
