New York City InDesign User GroupMeeting Notes Archive
Monday, July 18, 2005
It was a hot summer night, but despite the humidity, just under 100 loyalists turned up to attend the July meeting of the NYC InDesign® user group. Held once again in the handsome (and wonderfully air-conditioned) McGraw-Hill/Macmillan auditorium, the evening began with a demo of TypeFitter, a new plug-in from Teacup Software. Steve Kortch of Simon & Schuster did the demo since TypeFitter sprang from an idea he had for creating a plug-in that would help book designers at S&S. Steve contacted Teacup's Lawrence Horwitz about the idea and the rest is history.
Following TypeFitter, chapter rep Scott Citron introduced Adobe's Thomas Phinney, Program Manager, Fonts & Core Technologies. In town to attend TypeCon, being held at the Parsons School of Design, Thomas gave the group a one-hour presentation that covered everything from OpenType® to Unicode. Along the way Thomas also addressed the issues of legacy fonts plus what the future holds for the Type 1 format. A complex subject for mere mortals, the talented Mr. Phinney did an excellent job keeping the subject close to the ground.
After a break, Scott introduced the comedy, er, design duo of Roberto de Vicq de Cumptich and Matteo Bologna. By day Roberto is Sr. VP/Art Director at HarperCollins Publishers, while Matteo is the Principal of his own Mucca Design. First at bat was Matteo, who showed a sampling of his inspired work everything from a restaurant logo and a menu design to book jackets for Rizzoli. Roberto also wowed the audience with many of his book jacket designs, but most impressive was the series of famous author portraits, from Kafka to Melville, created for their award-winning and Adobe-sponsored book Words at Play.
The night concluded with the customary raffle, photos of which can be seen on this site. Thanks again to all who made it; our next meeting will be in mid-September, with specific details coming as soon as they are available.
