Last night's meeting of the New York City InDesign® user group, titled “Fonts and Foibles,” began with a sneak peek from Lawrence Horwitz, of Teacup Software, at their new table styles/cell styles plug-ins for InDesign® CS. If you spend much time producing tables in InDesign, you'll want to run to pick up these helpful additions.
Following Lawrence was noted type authority and author of Type Rules!, Ilene Strizver. Ilene spent 45 minutes offering a taste of what she calls “gourmet typography,” the hows and whys of what makes good-looking type.
After a short break, font management magician Caleb Clauset launched into his “Think Different About Fonts” presentation. A noted designer and Macintosh consultant from Washington, D.C., Caleb mesmerized the group with his knowledge and understanding of the intricacies of fonts and font management issues.
By the way, last night's meeting was a landmark evening! With more than 300 registered chapter members and over 180 attending, this event set the record for the largest meeting of all InDesign user group chapters worldwide. Thanks to all who came, and a special thanks to Adobe, Noha Edell, and, of course, McGraw-Hill/Macmillan for their beautiful auditorium. Thanks too to our generous sponsors for providing another excellent selection of raffle items. Hats off to Jeff Warnock of Adobe Press, Monica Eagle of Extensis, Bob Leeds of Insider Software, and Lawrence Horwitz of Teacup Software.
Thanks again to everyone. I continue to be amazed by the number of new members who attend each meeting, and I am thrilled by the support of those old-timers who keep coming back. It's your continued dedication and interest that make our group what it is today.
