New York City InDesign User GroupMeeting Notes Archive

The evening began with chapter representative Scott Citron welcoming the 125 soggy attendees to the group's new location at the beautiful McGraw-Hill Auditorium in midtown Manhattan.
After Scott’s opening remarks, the meeting began with a presentation by Tim Kinslow, Adobe's VP of Engineering. In town from his Seattle office, Tim spoke about the history of InDesign® and the engineering philosophy behind it. Tim also fielded a number of questions from the audience, most of which had to do with the future direction of the product.
Following Tim, Scott introduced the featured guest of the evening, Adobe's Terry White. The co-author of InDesign CS Killer Tips (New Riders) and a regular contributor to MacDesign magazine, Terry entertained and educated the group with his mastery of InDesign by providing countless tips and tricks to make users more productive in their favorite product.
After the break during which Terry White autographed over 40 copies of his book, Lawrence Horwitz, President of Teacup Software, demonstrated his new InDesign plug-in, PatternMaker. Developed in conjunction with InDesign authority David Blatner, PatternMaker generates PostScript® patterns via its own extensive palette. These patterns can be scaled, colored, transformed, and used with other transparency effects to achieve an endless variety of results.
Speaking of plug-ins, Scott Dunn of Flux Consulting took a moment to describe a new plug-in he's developed to allow InDesign users to toggle to the eyedropper tool via a keyboard shortcut while editing text. To download this free plug-in, visit Flux Consulting’s website.
When Terry returned, he continued to amaze the group for another 30 minutes with more valuable tips and tricks from his InDesign arsenal.

Of course, what meeting would be complete without our customary raffle? Among the gifts flying out the door were two great plug-ins from Triple Triangle (Spec Cubed and Color Cubed), training DVDs from Total Training, several great books from Adobe Press, a $500 CD of design templates from StockLayouts, a copy of Teacup's PatternMaker plug-in, a couple of Adobe T-shirts, and one copy each of Adobe InDesign CS and the Adobe Creative Suite Premium Edition. Many, many thanks to our sponsors for their kind and continuing support. A big thanks goes to NAPP Publishing and MacDesign magazine for generously supplying us with free copies of their essential publication.
Until next time, have a safe and healthy holiday and a happy new year!
