Wednesday, June 30, 2004

The New York City InDesign® user group convened at Pratt Manhattan on the evening of Wednesday, June 30, 2004. With another packed house in attendance, chapter representative Scott Citron began the night welcoming the many first time members in the audience. As a service to all, Scott, along with Adobe’s Noha Edell, spent time showing off new content to the InDesign User Group Website.

Scott concluded his opening remarks by showing off some advance spreads he’d designed for the soon to be available InDesign Magazine (see link below). The subscription-only magazine is the creation of desktop publishing know-it-all David Blatner and Creativepro.com Editor-in-Chief Pamela Pfiffner, and will be distributed bi-monthly in PDF form. Featured writers will include InDesign experts Sandee Cohen, Olav Martin Kvern, Mordy Golding, and Diane Burns, among others. Scott also told members about a free “History” plug-in for InDesign called MultiDo, available from British developers 65bit (see link below).

Next up were the evening’s featured guests, Made up of Jim Cooper, Jeff Kazanow, and Shailendra Chauhan of Denver's Onus LLC. former Quark, Inc. veterans, Onus now spends much of its time consulting with publishing clients, helping them transition to InDesign. After a brief introduction by Shailendra and Jeff, Jim Cooper stepped up to the plate to demo plug-ins from WoodWing Software.

Among the products demoed were Smart Connection Enterprise and Lite, Smart Layout, Smart Catalog, and the amazing Smart Styles. Smart Connection is a "bridge" technology the works as a link between InDesign and InCopy®. Smart Layout is designed primarily for the newspaper industry to ease page formatting. Smart Catalog helps catalogers automate repetitive layout tasks. Smart Styles is a powerful tool for creating multistyled text frames and tables. To really appreciate these products, members were encouraged to download the 30-day demos themselves.

After Jim’s presentation, the group took questions from the floor. Several questions were about how to remove paragraph and character formatting attributes from placed Word documents. Their answer? Hold Option/Alt, and click on the paragraph style name to force text to respect the applied style. If this doesn’t work, hold Shift-Option/Alt, which will remove additional character-level formatting.

The night concluded with another rousing raffle. Thanks again to our generous sponsors for their contributions to our raffle. Those sponsors include Adobe Systems, Adobe Press, Total Training, and Insider Software.
