June 28, 2006

Our June meeting covered two topics: document conversion and interactive documents. Over 60 members from as far away as Madison Wisconsin as well as Red Wing and Mankato joined us at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design on a beautiful Minnesota summer evening.

InDesign trainer and consultant Keith Gilbert from Gilbert Consulting started things off with a presentation on Converting Quark and PageMaker files to InDesign (available for download below). After a brief overview of how to prepare files for conversion, Keith discussed specifics of what can go wrong during the conversion process, and how to fix these problems quickly and easily in InDesign. Much discussion about conversion issues followed. Keith prepared a helpful handout detailing many of these issues, which you can download here in PDF format.

Next up was Mark VerMurlen, InDesign Engineering Manager at Adobe Systems. Mark gave an engaging presentation about how to create interactive documents with InDesign. He began with a bit of history as to why Adobe included interactive features in InDesign, and well as situations when you might find these features useful. Next, Mark pulled up an InDesign document, and added interactive elements such as page-turning buttons, hyperlinks, movies, sounds, and buttons that show and hide page elements. He gave solid advice about how to make this all work in the final PDF file.

The evening concluded with fantastic giveaways. 22 lucky members went home with a copy of InDesign, a book from Peachpit Press or O’ Reilly, a Total Training video, or a new mouse from Central Coast Solutions.
