Minneapolis InDesign User GroupMeeting Notes Archive

A light snow fell during late afternoon that may have attributed to a few people forgoing the trip to Minneapolis College of Art & Design (MCAD) for this InDesign® meeting. Still, about 60 people attended the meeting in the fabulous MCAD auditorium. After some announcements from Keith Gilbert, the fearless leader of the Minneapolis InDesign user group, there was a call for people to attend the Student Design Intern Fair at Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis, where students with experience in InDesign will be available for interviews in the hopes of landing an internship.
The main presentation for the evening was given by David Bergsland, an experienced and knowledgable user of InDesign since its inception. David's topic was "Using Styles Effectively". A complete PDF of his booklet on this topic is available on his website.

David, a native of Minnesota, just moved back from Albuquerque, New Mexico, after teaching InDesign for many years at Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute. David decided to move back to Minnesota to work with Business Solutions Group, a subsidiary of the Taylor Corporation, assisting with their conversion of Mac-based Quark files over to InDesign on a Windows platform, and to be closer to family. David has authored several books and papers on InDesign and other design-related software, which are available on his website. David is an avid font designer, with many OpenType® fonts available at www.myfonts.com and at his website (listed above).
Some of the highlights of David's presentation were as follows:
- Benefits of styles
- Setting up and using styles as a starting point for new documents
- Capturing, copying, and modifying styles for future documents
- How styles can provide total control over your whole document
- How personal preference can affect and influence your styles
- The importance of key commands and their relationship to styles
The evening ended with David answering questions relating to character, paragraph and object styles in InDesign, along with questions about InDesign in general. Over 25 door prizes, including books, software, and mice, were given away at the conclusion of the meeting to the lucky attendees who had their names pulled from the fishbowl.
