We changed our February meeting date to take advantage of print production expert Claudia McCue from Practicalia being available in the Milwaukee area. Good thing we did—because she showed us how we can all confidently design with transparency for InDesign.
There was a fabulous turnout at the WCTC Quadracci Center of Excellence (aka the Graphics Building), packing the Distance Learning Center full again. Some IDUG members carpooled from Madison, over an hour away! There were many education members present: several instructors from the college-level Graphic Design programs in the area attended including UWM, MATC, & MIAD. Katja DeHaney, a graphic designer and instructor at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, brought along her entire “Print Production for Graphic Designers” class to the meeting.
The two InDesign instructors from WCTC, Terry Rydberg and James Wamser, were also able to join us for the standing-room-only event. Turns out that Claudia taught Terry years ago! It was a great reunion with Claudia’s former student, now also a teacher.
Claudia is a very dynamic presenter, bringing much humor and enthusiasm to her topics. She showed a mastery of digital prepress, making recommendations to smooth out the production process for the print shop by saving InDesign layouts as PDFs with the correct settings and several different file creation methods. She demystified Overprint Preview and Flattener Preview, using them as forensic tools to be sure that files print as expected.
Claudia made these technical production topics very approachable to the creatives in the audience through lots of jokes, true stories, and fun examples. No more Scary Shadows or Terrifying Transparency. No more Freaky Feathered Edges or Obnoxious Opacity holding up our projects. We learned best practices and plenty of tips and tricks to ensure that our InDesign transparency will output exactly as planned.
