Meeting Summary: FAQ Night
Thu, Feb 26th, 2009 at 6:30 PM
RMIT University, Brunswick
Event DetailsQuestions by members, for members. That was mantra for our previous meeting.
Members were welcomed to submit their thorny InDesign-related questions and have them answered by the two experts in their field at the meeting: Mike McHugh (Adobe guru) and Billy Atta (pre-press specialist).
It didn’t take too long before we received over 20 questions. Unfortunately, we only had enough time to cover 6 questions.
In the short span of 2 hours, we learnt:
- how to work around tricky situations in typography involving orphans and widows (thanks to Sean Savanah)
- a simple explanation on how to use XML (thanks to Jessika Keegan)
- many priceless template tips (thanks to Rebecca Szw)
- how to work with italic formatting that had been imported from Word (thanks to Louise Ayres)
- the basic difference between Exporting to PDF and Printing to PDF (thanks to Lara Di Lizio)
- about the new preflight feature in InDesign (thanks to Yves Ayoun).
What about the other questions, you ask. Not to worry. InDesign whiz, Neil Oliver, will cover all the questions that missed out at the meeting on his website complete with video tutorials! Check them out at www.creativementor.com.au.
It was a great meeting filled with enthusiasm and spontaneity. The audience particularly enjoyed seeing things from the pre-press/printer’s perspective.
In addition to our usual prize-giveaway, we held an auction and raised over AUD$600.00 for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal which we hope will help many fellow Victorians who have been affected by the disaster.
Thank you

Comments from attendees
Enjoyed the bants between press (Billy) and designer (Mike)!
What I found most interesting tonight is having our own answers answered!
Really enjoyed all that valuable info about printing, postscripts, PDFs etc. Solid gold!
We should have more of these - more often!
There are so many things I didn't ever know InDesign had, that can make designing and layout much easier.
Very helpful topics!
As a complete self-taught InDesign CS3 newbie - everything was interesting!
It's always good to get the printer's perspective on printable files.
