The InDesign User Group of Madison launched with many new Madison-area members and some overlap from the Milwaukee IDUG. A few designers traveled over an hour to attend our first meeting! We’re glad to offer such valuable information that draws people from across the state and even across state lines.

Our generous host and sponsor Madison Media Institute is a high-tech multi-media and design school.

We opened the floor to any designers, freelancers or new grads looking for InDesign work, allowing them each a minute to exercise their elevator speech and introduce themselves. We also had one new member looking to hire an experienced InDesign user, so several great networking contacts were made. Just a reminder to take advantage of the valuable connections possible within our group.

We talked about upcoming Creative Suite 3 conferences and training in the Chicago area, and available event discounts. A few designers shared stories about their experiences with the newest version of InDesign.

We continued the meeting with a review of InDesign CS3 new features. Our Madison Chapter Representative, Cathy Palmer from Digital Design Tools, walked us through some of the exciting new functions including multi-image place, table styles, and targeted transparency effects. There were plenty of detailed questions from the audience, especially about how to handle effects, which are easy to transfer and apply from object to object, or even to different aspects (Fill/Stroke/Type) within an object. CS2 users were relieved to hear that the cool new Table Styles built into CS3 are also available for earlier InDesign versions as a plug-in from Teacup Software.
