London InDesign User GroupMeeting Notes Archive
October 16, 2007
The first meeting of the IDUG London on 16th October was a resounding success, and the choice of the ICO as a venue (light-heartedly described as "the U.N. for Coffee" and "like something from a Bond movie") was a fantastic setting in which to launch the group and enjoyed by alleven dedicated tea drinkers like me.
Our special guest, Senior InDesign Product Manager Michael Ninness, illuminated the auditorium with his extremely informative and enjoyable presentation, providing a wealth of tips and tricks with some interesting background information on the development of InDesign CS3. Since the meeting, Michael has also come up with an excellent offer for IDUG London members to try out the Lynda.com training library absolutely FREE for a week (valid until the end of December 2007). 5 top tips and productivity boosters
Here are just five of the many useful tips and tricks revealed at the meeting…
-
Cmd-6 (Ctrl-6 on PC) takes the focus to the first item on the Control Stripa real time saver.
-
Don’t reach for that Direct Selection tool when you want to manipulate an image in its frame: Double-click it with the Selection tool and when you’re done, double-click again to exit.
-
InDesign CS3 can place several images at once; with a loaded cursor you can cycle through them using your arrow keys.
-
You don’t need a calculator! Many input boxes in InDesign can understand basic math functions. Try something like 210/2 in the width value and you’ll get it.
-
The new bulleted & numbered lists feature in IDCS3combine it with stylesreally powerful stuff.
The best place to pick up great tips? your nearest IDUG, of course!

All of the feedback on the evaluation forms was positive and there have been some good suggestions for future meeting topics, with font management featuring quite prominently. Rest assured that ’wheels are in motion’watch this space!
I look forward to meeting you all again at our next meeting (which will be announced soon) and don’t forget to tell your friends and colleagues about the IDUG.
Finally, I’d like to thank Jonathan Ferman and our sponsors at Adobe for all the hard work in putting the evening together; I’m also very grateful to the other companies that were kind enough to donate prizes: Markzware, InDesignSecrets.com and Adobe Authorised Training Centre, Academy Class.
