Event Details

On April 7, 127 members came to Schoolcraft College to learn how to make short work of long documents. Whether you create books or not, those who came got some valuable new tips and timesavers! And to write all those important tips down we distributed custom designed DIDUG notepads supplied by West Metro Printing. The March/April Layers Magazine, a valuable issue full of CS4 tips, was also given out to everyone.

The debut of the Answer Desk, our newest meeting resource, was finally unveiled. While eating pizza and cookies, members brought in their questions for a little one-on-one with our volunteers. Many thanks go to volunteers Tom Bellaver, Web Litho, Inc.; Robert Robbins, West Metro Printing Company; and Laura Lyday, LydayCreative. We hope to continue to offer this before all meetings.

If you are interested in sharing your knowledge to make this a true user group, consider volunteering your time at our Answer Desk. Experts wanted in Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, prepress, Flash, print and web production, etc. Why volunteer? As Tom responded, “Let’s call this a pioneering moment for the Detroit IDUG! I’m really hoping to get some good networking mileage out of this, and if I can help someone by sharing my knowledge of print and graphics, well, that’s just icing on the cake.”
Jamie McKee—a long-time InDesign user, teacher, speaker and typesetter for university presses throughout the country—started the evening’s presentation with Type Styles, Master Pages, Text Variables, and Smart Text Reflow. He provided a well-received handout which is available below. Then Chita Hunter, our resident expert and trainer, focused on the InDesign Book features: Creating a Book and the Book Panel, Table of Contents, Indexing, Cross Referencing, and Conditional Text/Objects.

The evening concluded with our raffle. Prizes included books, a subscription to StockLayouts template library, a LinkOptimizer plug-in, a FoldRite Template Master plug-in, Kelby Training Online, a subscription to InDesign Magazine, one copy of Flow software, and one copy of CS4 Dreamweaver.
