Our next meeting will be early in the new year. Scheduled for January 13, we are pleased that Daniel Dejan, North American ETC (Education, Training, Consulting) Print & Creative Manager for Sappi Fine Paper, will be presenting two relevant topics that evening. Join us as he discusses life with print and teaches us some new varnish & coating techniques. I’m sure you have heard the rumor that print is dying. Integrated Marketing, Multi-Channel Distribution, Viral Marketing, Glance Media are a few of the many descriptors currently used to describe the new business models being implemented by advertisers, marketers and media strategists. Our consumer society is abound with new devices, many hand held, as primary sources for communications and intra-connectivity which leads traditional, legacy medias such as television, radio and Print to ask the larger questions “Where do we fit in?” and “Is Print truly a waning media?” Daniel will discuss how the print industry can grow its share by proving its effectiveness as part of the communications mix. Using elements from Sappi’s “Life With Print, Direct Mail and Brochures & Catalog Campaigns,” this discussion demonstrates the truly unique way print adds value to capturing memories, imagination and attention to build brands, sell goods and deliver corporate messages. Focus will be on generating visibility for the concept of print as a superior communications mix within the creative community and among advertising and marketing decision makers and influencers. After our break, Daniel will present a comprehensive demonstration of the latest varnish and coatings technology using the “Standard #3: Varnishes & Coatings.” This visually captivating book is filled with comparisons and examples of spot, halftone and tinted varnishes, as well as aqueous and ultraviolet coating techniques such as strike-through, textured, soft-touch, scented and thermochromatic effects. You'll find the issue is also filled with practical and informative tips, print demonstrations -- from the most basic to the highly elaborate -- and a glossary of terms to help simplify the process. This Sappi Standard is the perfect nexus between the technical and the creative and will hopefully prove to be an invaluable resource in your work. As further example of Sappi's commitment to sustainability, all of the techniques shown in this issue are eco-friendly and non-toxic, and are achieved using ingredients that are recyclable. Varnishes aren’t what they used to be!
