November 8, 2007
Our meeting was sponsored by
Edwards Graphic Arts who brought in snacks and drinks.
Jeremy Schultz, Graphic Designer and a member of our User Group, presented “Interactive PDFs using InDesign” to a record 69 knowledge-hungry attendees.
Jeremy explained some of the benefits of using PDF for presentations: small files, Acrobat Reader can be used, multimedia support, and cross-publishing. And some of the drawbacks: PDF is not widely known or accepted as a presentation format, needs Acrobat 6 or greater, and Acrobat and Reader show warnings by default for QuickTime and button functions.
He then walked us through how to create an interactive PDF right within InDesign and covered the following topics:
- Accessing InDesign’s Interactive Features
- Hyperlinks
- Bookmarks
- Navigation
- Movies
- Sound
- Export
- Acrobat Initial View
- Acrobat Transitions
The second half of our meeting we tried something newQuestion and Answer. There were a few people who sent in questions before the meeting and that was great, it gave us a chance to research the problem and come to the meeting with answers. In the future we are going to limit the Q&A to 15 minutes at the end of the meeting before the raffle drawing.
During our meeting, Jeremy spoke about cross-publishing content. A few weeks after our meeting, Adobe released a new product that works with Acrobat and is a great addition for those wanting to go down the path of cross-publishing, such as newspapers and magazines. The product is in Beta and called “Ads for Adobe PDF Powered by Yahoo!” This is a way to have ads in your PDF file so you can generate revenue from ad clicksjust like what you would have on your website.
