Cleveland InDesign User Group

May 15, 2007

The Cleveland InDesign User Group had a great launch of CS3 on May 15.

58 members squeezed themselves into the Future Center at The Cleveland Institute of Art to get the area's first tour of CS3 in general, and InDesign CS3 in particular.

Chapter Rep Mari Hulick launched the meeting with a brief overview of all the benefits of the User Group website, including discounts on books and magazines, tips and tricks.

Then, Adobe's Mike Richman gave the main presentation. He opened with an quick overview of the entire package, including Illustrator's new Live Color feature, Photoshop's new Quick Select tool (this feature alone sold some new copies on the spot), and then turned to a slightly more in-depth overview of InDesign and the Bridge.

One of the most exciting new features in InDesign is Effects - no longer limited to objects, now InDesign can apply transparency effects to frames, fills, objects, and text. The relationship between Photoshop and InDesign has become richer.

Productivity has improved with the ability to load multiple files into a layout, and thumbnails in the pages pallet that help one see their layouts without having to guess what content is on which page.

Styles have become even richer, with new bullet and numbering schemes now included. Tables are even easier to use, with table and cell styles. And styles can now be grouped into folders.

We also took a look at the online community that has been set up through Adobe Labs. We revisited Kuler (http://kuler.adobe.com/) and looked at the overview of available resources offered through Adobe Labs (http://labs.adobe.com/).

As interest in CS3 was high, we ended the presentation with the InDesign CS3 web link and Adobe's toll-free Customer Service number, 800-833-6687.

We ended the evening with raffles of books and finally a copy of InDesign CS3. The Photos of the evening will be up shortly. Mari has promised to move the meetings to a larger venue, so please, bring your friends to the next meeting. (We also promise the air conditioning will work!)

Here's what the attendees had to say:

"Great meeting. I'm looking forward to upgrading to CS3!"

"It was Awsome, really enjoyed the tips and changes info. Very well presented."

"Great Info! I love these meetings!"

"Excellent pace. Very informational and fun filled. Thank you for having these meetings!"

"Very informative and fun!"
