Cleveland InDesign User Group

Meeting Notes Archive

March 15, 2007

The March Meeting of the Cleveland InDesign User Group featured a Publishing Panel made up of Gary Sluzewski, Design Director for Great Lakes Publishing and Art Director of Cleveland Magazine, Rob McGarr, Art Director of Ohio Magazine and Adam Witwer, Art Director of Inside Business. We met at the Future Center in The Cleveland Institute of Art. The meeting was launched by the Chapter Rep, Mari Hulick, who gave a preview of Adobe Labs - spotlighting the Kuler (kuler.adobe.com) site, where people can create advanced color pallets. The panel was moderated by April Clark of Nuance Consulting.

Gary Sluzewski started off the evening with an overview of why and how they switched from Quark to InDesign in such a large organization. They had been interested in the features of InDesign, but the two biggest issues in making the switch were access to legacy files and rapid training to stay on production schedule. April, a certified Adobe instructor, was instrumental in the training part of the switch. In terms of transferring legacy files, they used a few methods, including converting Quark docs back to Quark 4.0, importing them into an earlier version of InDesign, and then updating those documents. In some cases, they even copied and pasted content from one program into another.

Rob and Adam discussed and then demonstrated InDesign default layouts, templates, and style features such as Nested Styles and the sharing of styles between documents. We showed the group the Glyphs palette and demonstrated how to save and share glyph sets among documents. Adam discussed how he used snippets even more than master pages in maintaining consistency throughout his publications.

Quotes from Evaluation forms:

“Learned new tips/tricks, and I liked being in an environment with fellow Creatives who share the passion for type.”

“The Guys from GLP were great. I like seeing how the various businesses use the application and their workflow.”

“Excellent. Learned at least 2 things I’ll incorporate immediately.”

“Good to see that members were not afraid to say what they did not know; this led to a really informative meeting.”
