Styles Trivia and Interactive Portfolios
Tue, Nov 10th, 2009 at 6:30 PM
Cleveland Institute of Art, Gund Building
Event Details

On Tuesday, November 10, 2009, we had more than FIFTY people in attendance and lots of tasty treats!

In addition to the InDesign birthday cake from Presti's, we has specially-made bags of CMYKandy (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black M&Ms in a bag) to give away to those answering our style-related trivia questions correctly.

We started with a few style questions and a review of using the Paragraph Styles panel, the Character Styles panel, and the Object Styles panel.

April Clark moderated a discussion answering the following style-related trivia questions:
  • What is the difference between a paragraph style and a character style?
  • How do you format only specific characters with a paragraph?
  • What must you have created previously in order to create a nested style? April demonstrated how to create Nested Styles (you must define Character Styles first).
  • What are two ways to globally updated a style you've applied to an InDesign document?
  • What does the + (plus) symbol mean after a style? How do you fix a style that has overrides?
  • What are the keyboard shortcuts to open the Style panels?

  • Pat Lally demonstrated how to create Interactive Portfolios from Adobe InDesign. He showed an example of an actual freelance artist portfolio (his own) and set up NEXT and PREVIOUS Buttons on the master page. He also created hyperlinks and page transitions. Pat showed how the features work in both Acrobat (PDF) and Flash (exported as SWF).

A similar demonstration by Michael Ninness at Adobe can be found on Adobe TV: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-indesign-cs4/export-from-indesign-to-swf

April then created a photo gallery using Adobe InDesign. This method was blogged about by Rufus Deuchler in November of 2009. You can read more about this here: http://blogs.adobe.com/rufus/2009/11/create_a_flash_web_gallery_wit.html#more

    Comments from attendees

    Much Fun! Very cool tips!

Topic was very interesting. Can't wait to create an interactive PDF!

The meeting was informative and inspiring.

April is very energetic - Great Presentation!!

    Automation-type topics are always good.

Pat's topic was great! Did not know InDesign could do that.

Great! I needed to know this stuff.

Portfolio: nice idea: nothing I've attempted before. Will definitely put it to use.

The presenters were very knowledgeable and active.

Great stuff - wish I had CS4, but good to know much of this. Especially since I may need to create a portfolio soon.

Thanks and keep up the high quality of info at the meetings.

Wonderful to see and hear about all the capabilities. I thought I knew more, but I was wrong...
