Housekeeping matters included announcing some changes in the group. Andrew Keith Strauss, former chapter representative, has moved to San Diego. Clint Funk has replaced Andrew as our new chapter rep. Charlie Townes, who helped establish our meeting space at Capps Digital University, has moved to Minneapolis. Rich McCormick-Carroll now adds Charlie’s former responsibilities to his.

Eda Warren spoke about the differences between Quark 6.0 and InDesign CS. Eda is the author of a recent book titled Killer Tips for Quark 6. For research she created a comprehensive comparison between the two applications. The presentation was incredibly detailed, with the edge going clearly to InDesign.

Here are some of the highlights of her presentation:

  • InDesign creates frames on the fly, or manually
  • Transparency—live for both text and graphics
  • Customized workspaces in InDesign CS, and palette stashing
  • Your Pages palette can be reconfigured to appear horizontally
  • Illustrator tools and functions are built in (i.e., create outlines, shear, pencil, etc.)
  • Paste remembers layers
  • Quark 6.0 maintains the look and feel of earlier versions
  • Layout spaces allow projects of different sizes within one project
  • Synchronized text
  • Will save back only to Quark 5.0—files are encrypted

Clint introduced InDesign CS PageMaker Edition. Adobe announced at Macworld that there would be no future development on PageMaker. To allow PageMaker users an easy transition to InDesign, a set of plug-ins was announced. Those plug-ins are collectively known as InDesign CS PageMaker Edition. Owners of PageMaker can upgrade for $349. The PageMaker Plug-in Pack will be available for download, from the Adobe site, for $49. Therefore, all InDesign CS users can take advantage of the following:

  • Template browser
  • Position tool
  • PageMaker too bar
  • Data merge
  • Automated bullets and numbering
  • InBooklet SE (Build Booklet solution)
  • Opens PageMaker 6.0, 6.5, and 7.0 files

Clint spoke about his impressions of Macworld and presented a slide show of his photos. The meeting ended with a raffle of Adobe Press books and Total Training CDs.

Thanks to Jennifer Mindel for help in preparing the notes, and thanks to all who participated.
