If you're a good designer in print, chances are you'll be able to wrap your mind around a design concept, whether it's for print or for a table: Good design is good design.
Jerry Silverman
Solutions Engineer
Adobe Systems Inc.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our most recent meeting, InDesign for the Web! Read below for links to all the resources mentioned in the meeting, how to contact us on LinkedIn or by email, and for upcoming meeting dates (all the way at the end).
The meeting was very successful, with 56 attendees, many of whom were new members. Welcome, and we're glad you joined us! We began the evening with networking over Subway subs and a cake (courtesy of Adobe) celebrating InDesign's 10th anniversary. (Has it been 10 years already?) Adobe's Derek Neal and Jerry Silverman were on hand to answer folks' pressing questions before the meeting. And, sadly, we found out that Noha Edell has moved to a new position within Adobe and will no longer be our contact. (We'll miss you, Noha!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~To start the meeting, our Chapter Representative, Magda Saina, welcomed us and again called us all to contribute to make this IDUG the best it can be. And here's how:
Magda then introduced Kristi Marren, who last meeting won the raffle for the 3-day Platinum Pass to the DC InDesign Conference that was held in November. Kristi shared some of her favorite InDesign CS4 power shortcuts that she learned at the conference from Michael Ninness, Senior Product Manager for InDesign at Adobe:
For more, see the full video of Michael's presentation on Adobe TV: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/max-2009-design/indesign-cs4-power-shortcuts/.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Next up was Don Vislay's Share Your Shorts! (AKA How InDesign Saved the Day) presentation. As former Art Director for the Johns Hopkins APL Technical Digest, Don worked closely with the current Art Director, Diane Dorsey; the Managing Editor, Angela Hughes; and a team of about a dozen editors, illustrators, and publications designers to make the impossible happen: publish an issue of the Digest in less than 10 work weeks. Don discussed how InDesign helped lighten our load through the use of templates, styles, and the book functionality!
For more in-depth information on these Digest InDesign processes, contact Angela Hughes at IDUG.GreaterBaltimore@gmail.com. For those who asked, the Digest publication is available online at http://techdigest.jhuapl.edu/ (the next issue, 28/3, will be posted in February). And, as always, you can search Adobe's InDesign support site (by software version) for topics by keyword or browse InDesign online help at www.adobe.com/support/indesign.
Remember, we want to hear about your projects too! Share Your Shorts! with us by sending a PDF (under 5 MB) of no more than 20 of your images and a project description to IDUG.GreaterBaltimore@gmail.com, and your project may be selected for an upcoming meeting.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Featured Presentation
InDesign for the Web: Best Practices for Interactivity
Our featured speaker, Jerry Silverman, Solutions Engineer for Adobe Systems, showed us some of the ways to take your print publications from InDesign and transition them to the web. Jerry talked about print vs. web workflows and InDesign exports to HTML/CSS and Flash. We also saw a very quick sneak peek of the beta Adobe Flash Catalyst (http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashcatalyst/), which allows the designer to create expressive web interfaces and interactive content without writing code! Jerry's full presentation is downloadable at the bottom of this meeting summary page.
One other neat trick we saw was how Jerry spotlighted the part of the screen he was showing us. "How'd he do that?!" we all wondered. He used Mouseposè by Boinx. Wow: http://www.boinx.com/mousepose/overview/.
