On August 11th, 2003, about 40 faithful Atlanta InDesign® user group members gathered in the Macquarium theater to hear about the integration of InDesign with Adobe Acrobat. Since InDesign implements the PDF Library, it’s capable of importing and exporting PDFs without the need for third-party software (and that includes Acrobat itself). That’s almost as impressive as the fact that every single member stayed awake through the presentation, even when things didn’t go quite as planned. (First rule of Demo: do not change anything on your computer the day of a demo.)

During the “get-acquainted” pizza-and-registration part of the evening, old members welcomed curious new visitors. It was great to see that a number of frequent attendees had persuaded friends to join them. Please do invite your colleagues and friends so they can add to the liveliness of the group!

Members were offered a 20% discount on Total Training materials (if you’ve forgotten your secret discount code, please send me an E-mail and I’ll remind you). In addition, the special offer includes free ground shipping. What’s not to love? And don’t forget that, as a User Group Member, you’re entitled to 30% off all Adobe Press titles (which includes the swell Classroom-in-a-Book series).

Claudia McCue demonstrated importing PDFs into InDesign, and the deceptive ease of creating PDFs from InDesign. As with all things that seem “just too easy,” InDesign’s export has some pitfalls: directly-exported PDFs contain fonts defined as “CID” (aka “Identity H”) fonts. On recent-model RIPs and desktop printing devices, this is a non-issue. But older printers may choke — especially HPs which use PostScript emulation rather than the Real Thing. One remedy is to print to file and Distill manually, although in rare cases some fonts may still show up as CID-flavored. Curious about the fonts in your PDF? In Acrobat, choose File > Document Properties.

Thanks to everyone who came out to devote their evening to the joys of InDesign

Best regards,
Claudia McCue
