Atlanta InDesign User Group

Meeting Notes Archive

Thursday, April 24, 2003
April marked our first meeting in the beautiful Macquarium facility. Macquarium is wonderfully supportive of the local user groups in Atlanta, and we’re thrilled to be holding our meetings there. From the stylish upstairs bar (where we held our before-meeting pizza party), to the well-equipped auditorium, it’s a great environment for our growing group.

Buy a Raffle Ticket: Eat Pizza and Win a Prize (or Two)!
In order to defray the cost of refreshments and the overtime cost of a security guard, we’ve begun charging a small fee for raffle tickets: $3.00 each, or four for $10.00. We were spared the cost of the guard at the April meeting due to a change in security companies, but we did snarf down $145 worth of pizza and soft drinks (feel full?). The good turnout, coupled with enthusiastic ticket purchases, resulted in our taking in $132; Noha Edell of Adobe Systems graciously made up the difference. So we’re reasonably self-sufficient, without necessitating membership dues, and hopefully we can keep it that way.

As a result of attendees purchasing multiple tickets, we had our first double winner: Danielle won the Total Training DVD, as well as Acrobat® 6.0. We debated whether this was legal, but decided that, since she is an expectant mother, she was winning for two. Other winners were:

  • Clint: Total Training DVD
  • James: Photoshop® Elements
  • Wayne: InDesign® 2.0

And a number of lucky attendees who went home with books from Peachpit Press and Adobe Press (next time, we’ll be sure to make winners write down their names).

Meeting Topics
Bill Carberry of PDF Experts was the main speaker, giving attendees some insights into the mysteries of OpenType®. Bill showed the extravagant character sets contained by some OpenType fonts, and spoke about the challenges of font management under OS X, as well as some of the issues faced by purchasers of fonts whose vendors limit embedding by highly restrictive licensing schemes.

Following Bill's exploration of OpenType, chapter representative Claudia McCue showed some quick text tricks, and fielded questions posed by members.

Meeting Vote
A quick vote determined that we will indeed keep to our every-other-month schedule, and continue to meet on Monday nights. We aim for the first or second Monday of the month.

Best regards,
Claudia McCue
