Despite cold weather, we had a very good turnout for our February meeting. Attendees included Art Institute students, local designers, art directors, and prepress folks. A total of 42 attendees noshed on pizza and admired the artwork on display in the Art Institute’s gallery, where the meeting was held.
Our presenter for the evening was Larry Miller, whose career as a designer and art director spans “the good old days” of mechanicals to the world of desktop publishing of today. In fact, his nickname is “Daddy Desktop.” Larry’s topic concerned reawakening creativity by utilizing good old-fashioned sketching and experimentation, with the computer as a refining tool rather than the primary tool of design. With other attendees operating the scanner and the mouse, Larry explored design experimentation involving scanned collages as a basis for layout. In addition, using a pen and paper to quickly sketch out a design and then using the scan as an “underlay” in InDesign®, served as the basis for a much more organic result than just using the computer might have.
