Atlanta InDesign User Group

Meeting Notes Archive

Monday, December 2, 2002
A small but enthusiastic band of InDesign user group members gathered on December 2 to hear Kenny Leahy of ProGraphics Communcations describe his company's experience imaging InDesign files. ProGraphics customer Greg Vaughn, of the RockTenn Company, brought printed samples of the finished piece to share with the group. While the production experience was described as positive, Kenny described some details of the job that had to be modified to image correctly through ProGraphics’ Scitex RIPs. For example, a black drop-shadow on top of a spot-color screen tint did not image correctly: the shadow knocked out. ProGraphics’ workaround solution was to replace the spot-color tint with a duotone image containing 0% black. Somehow this fooled the RIP into converting the shadow correctly. Kenny recommends that designers always communicate with their printer to ensure that their job succeeds (and this goes for everything — not just InDesign files!). Since most of the attendees have not seen a printing plant, it was suggested that we might devote one meeting to a tour of ProGraphics’ facility.

Next, Claudia McCue showed information on the wide array of two-button (and even more) mice available for the Macintosh. While Windows users have had right-clickability for years, Mac users haven't needed the second button. Until now. Given the proliferation of contextual menus in Adobe (and other) programs, a multi-button mouse is now a great aid to productivity. Users can find two button mice from a number of vendors, including Kensington and Macally.

We showed a number of tips and tricks for all levels of users and answered questions posed by attendees, followed by everyone’s favorite part of the evening — the raffle. Admittedly, the Monday after Thanksgiving is not an optimal time for a get-together (everyone was probably still suffering from turkey overdose), but it was good to see attendees from previous meetings, as well as new faces. Please spread the word and bring your friends to the next meeting, in February!

Thanks to all the hardy souls who dragged themselves away from holiday leftovers to attend the Atlanta InDesign users group meeting on the evening of December 2. I hope you learned some valuable tips from Kenny Leahy and Greg Vaughn as they described their experience producing an InDesign job. And perhaps you got some amusing gift ideas from the selection of multi-button mice (especially the Ken sing ton "glitter ball" model).
